The Chocolate Dessert Cafe: Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake

In my search for my favorite vanilla cupcake, or rather, my search to just become more familiar with Utah’s vanilla cupcakes. I’ve found one thing that I do when trying them out.

I smell them.

Well this cupcake, the vanilla vanilla cupcake from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem smells (and you’ll soon find out that it tastes) like the perfect sugar cookie. Which um…The Chocolate Dessert Cafe actually sells. And which, I enjoy.

Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah

Cupcakes as you know, force me into nostalgia. Did I use that right? Well it makes sense in my head. Cupcakes remind me of memories. And this cupcake has the memory sugar cookies all over it. Though it’s not my go-to cupcake at The Chocolate Dessert Cafe, I found it interesting. (Note: my favorite cupcake from The Chocolate is the chocolate caramel)

Let’s talk more about this vanilla cupcake.

Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah

The Chocolate doesn’t make this cupcake everyday. In fact, I’m not positive there is really a schedule for it. From what I’ve noticed and by info from workers at bakery you can usually get it on Thursday and Saturdays. (But no promises, here.)

You can buy it in the regular size or the mini size, which they call a baby cake.

Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah

See.. it is a baby. This cupcake usually has some sanding sugar or festive top. It was blue sanding sugar when I went in.

Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah

I think I have a new favorite spot in at The Chocolate. It’s this white table off in a corner upstairs. It has really good lighting and is sorta secluded and cool.

Okay, the cupcake. I found it interesting. Like I said it reminded me of a sugar cookie. It not only smelled like a sugar cookie but somehow resembled one when I ate it. The texture of the cake was reminiscent of a shortcake. A lot different from her other cakes, or any other cupcake for that matter. It had a major butter flavor pull through (that I liked) and was sort of crumbly at the bottom.

Then the frosting. Oh the frosting. I really enjoyed it. Again, it was reminded me of a nice butter cream frosting you’d find on a great sugar cookie…BUT…but then it’s more than that. It’s smoother, and almost whipped. Not too dense or heavy.

Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah

Overall, I found this vanilla cupcake threw a curve ball at me. I liked it but was confused by the texture. But then I liked the texture. The moistness of the cake hit me at the end and was buttery in a shortcakey way… It had a nice vanilla and buttery flavor…it all melts in your mouth at the end.

The Sweet Tooth Fairy: VaNIElla Squared

Vanilla Cupcake Week has officially been extended as a two week experience.

The opening of The Sweet Tooth Fairy first location in Provo was probably one of the biggest motivators for me to begin this blog. (See this post) I remember getting so excited and sneaking a peek at the location that I knew I would be visiting countless time for sweet tooth fixes. Then I remember Megan, The Sweet Tooth Fairy contacting me and having me try her cupcakes.

I have so much good to say about this bake shop. There is such a huge vision behind it and there are so many sweet treats that come along with the story.

We’re going to focus on VaNIElla Squared. And um, it hasn’t always had that name, or at least that spelling. Before we go further, let’s take a look at it:

VaNIElla (Vanilla) Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy Bake Shop in Provo, Utah

Yum. I also find it very pretty.

The Sweet Tooth Fairy's Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake (Provo, Utah)

Here’s a pix the vanilla cupcake before it had a special name. I think this was taken the week The Sweet Tooth Fairy opened her doors.
Here’s the story of why The Sweet Tooth Fairy named her most classic cupcake VaNIElla Squared.

“Last week, it was brought to our attention that Stephanie Nielson, a remarkable woman who has inspired and lifted thousands of us across the country for years, loves our Vanilla Squared Cupcakes. She even posted about them on her blog the NieNie Dialogues . She jokingly mentioned that she thought we should “name it vaNIElla squared because I can guarantee I will single-handedly keep that cupcake selection going.”

After a few email exchanges with Stephanie, we learned that she was “ecstatic” and “touched” about the idea. As such, we have officially changed the name of our “Vanilla Squared” cupcakes to “VaNIElla Squared.” We figured the gesture would be a ‘sweet’ little legacy for her–who has candidly taught so many of us about the joys of life/motherhood. Her attitude, faith, honesty, outlook, understanding of what’s important is so inspirational and so appreciated.

Her story is truly remarkable…you can read it here.”

Wasn’t that sweet? The Sweet Tooth Fairy bake shop has even held fundraisers for Stephanie Nielsen and her family.

Vanilla Cupcakes "VaNIElla Squared" - The Sweet Tooth Fairy (Provo, Utah)

Let’s get down to it. My review and thoughts about this classic flavor made by The Sweet Tooth Fairy.

The first thing I did when I opened up my cupcake box was smell the VaNIElla Squared cupcake. It’s smells good and I’ll describe what I smelled in one word: amaretto. That’s what comes to mind. I know you must be thinking, “What? Shouldn’t you be saying you smelled vanilla?” Well, no. See VaNIElla Squared is absolutely a vanilla cupcake, but what makes it special is how it varies from the traditional take on the vanilla cupcake. That difference being the frosting.

For me, the cake (though very good) is merely a vehicle to the frosting on this cupcake. (I could very well say this for MANY of my favorite cupcake flavors at various cupcake bakeries) The frosting is a complete mystery. The Sweet Tooth Fairy has told me she uses four different type of extracts in her frosting. All a secret.

My guess: amaretto, vanilla, coconut and shoot, who knows! When I did a tasting with The Cupcake Activist she guessed there was marzipan in it. The consistency of the frosting is great. Thick but not to heavy. You’ll notice in the first photo that it looks like some air bubbles have popped. I think this gives it such a cool homemade look. :) I love it.

The second element I paid attention to was the feel of this vanilla cupcake. Holding it it felt light and bear with me, almost squishy. (I say that with love) I only mean that if chosen, my little hands could squish the heck out of this cupcake’s cake into a tight ball real quick.  It really is a light, moist cake. The greatest thing about the cake being light is that it can still hold the frosting. The vanilla flavor in the cake pulls through mildly, but I get more of a spongy yellow and buttery cake as opposed to a strong vanilla.

You can spot the VaNIElla Squared cupcake from a mile away because of the sweet little candied cherry on its top. You’ll also notice that the cupcake that the Sweet Tooth Fairy is holding in her logo has a cherry on top. I’d like to think that she’s holding the VaNIElla Squared. Okay, I just double checked on her site because she has an updated logo and it’s now a cake. But it used to be a cupcake. I guess I’ll now say that it’s a VaNIElla Squared cake.

I’ve become more of a fan of this cupcake since November. I used to think it was good but just too sweet for my liking.  (That’s why I probably stick to my usual order of the Double Fudge Cake Bites, Cheesecake Cupcakes and others I find more balanced.) But I proved myself wrong. I don’t find it too sweet anymore, in fact, I think the next time I head to The Sweet Tooth Fairy I’ll probably buy this cupcake.

Oh and this reminds me about a post I need to write. The title will be “Why all cupcake reviews are subjective” or something to that matter. Oh man…I will go off on this one. I seriously have strong feelings that each time you consume a cupcake you will have a very different experience depending on mood, level of hunger, who you are with, environment, etc. But I’ll save that for later.

5 Cupcake thangs to do in Utah this Weekend!

Okay, so I’ve slacked off a bit on this blog since Tuesday. Can’t help it, but I’ve been a bit sick.

If your looking for some cupcake thangs to do in Utah this weekend here are my suggestions!

1) Sundance Film Festival – Watch a film, watch celebs and eat a cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy!
The Sweet Tooth Fairy at the Sundance Film Festival
The Sweet Tooth Fairy will be temporarily setting up shop within the Main Street Mall (333 Main Street) in Park City, Utah for the Sundance Film Festival.

2) 101 Gourmet Cupcakes in 10 Minutes – cookbook book signings!

Wendy Paul has made a very cool cupcake cookbook that will save you time, money and give you much praise! I haven’t personally made any recipes from this book yet. (I am so ready to try her rootbeer float one!) But my good friend Elise aka The Cupcake Activist has and you should read what she has to say about it here!

The book is going to give you lots of (101) ideas of how to make gourmet cupcakes, most if not all, I believe are recipes to doctor up a store-bough mix.

Go grab a copy of the book and have Wendy sign it herself!

Here’s the schedule for this weekend’s signings.

January 22 (FRI) 6-8:30 pm OREM COSTCO signing event

January 23 (SAT) 11-2 pm MURRAY COSTCO signing event
Can’t make it? Buy the book on Amazon, here!

Do you own this book? Have you made any recipes? Let me know!

3) Eat the Vegas, Baby! cupcake from Les Madeleines ..or any other cupcake or my non-cupcake favorite Kouing Aman!

Vegas Baby Cupcakes - Les Madeleines in Salt Lake City

One of my favorite cupcakes in Utah is this Vegas, Baby! cupcake from Les Madeleines. It’s a Vanilla Cupcake with Red Hots in the middle. (View the inside here!) Cream cheese frosting with real white chocolate sprinkles. Romina said on twitter yesterday that they have lots of cupcakes right now…so um…take your pick (cupcake menu here) and let me know which one you had. BUT if they have the Vegas, Baby! cupcake…you best take my recommendation!

4) Have a late night cupcake dessert at The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem!
The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah
I know I keep mentioning this dessert cafe. But it’s because I keep falling in love with the idea of it more and more! My husband and I went last weekend after ice skating for a hot cocoa (tell them you want it with spices, like when they did Christmas in a cup!) and a mini chocolate caramel cupcake! Seriously, this is quickly moving up my little “best cupcakes in utah” list!

5) Get excited for Vanilla Cupcake Week on Utah Loves Cupcake!
Vanilla Cupcakes from Mini's Cupcakes in Salt Lake City, Utah (Breakfast at Tiffany's and Pretty in Pink)
Two Vanilla Cupcakes from Mini’s Cupcakes in Salt Lake City

Next week I’ll be putting a HUGE cupcake focus on the vanilla! I’ll be featuring and reviewing various vanilla cupcakes from around Utah. I’m going to attempt to pick my favorite and maybe the best vanilla cupcake in utah. (It’s going to be hard!) I’ll be sharing vanilla ingredients and tips. Most of all, I’d love to hear from you about vanilla cupcakes. (I’m talking to you at-home bakers and cupcake enthusiasts AND you professional cupcake bakers) If you have a great recipe or a review of your own…email me or comment! It’s going to be a fun week!

Cupcake Price Sign

This is a good sign to have in your store…

you wouldn’t believe how many cupcakeries/bakeries don’t list their prices. not sure if it is on purpose so people just buy… either way. I find it very helpful when prices are listed, especially when specialty flavors cost more.

Cheesecake Cupcakes at The Sweet Tooth Fairy

I swear I say this every time I try a really good new cupcake flavor. But I’ll say it anyway…I think I have a new favorite cupcake flavor at The Sweet Tooth Fairy. It’s the Cheesecake Cupcake!

Cheesecake Cupcakes at The Sweet Tooth Fairy

Like an eager, curious and annoying customer I always call a cupcake shop to see what flavors they have going on. I mean, I usually have a good idea because the Sweet Tooth Fairy occasionally tweets about their flavors that day. And I know that they will always have their staples cause they smartly list them on their site for me to know: Double Fudge, VaNIElla Squared, Strawberry Shortcake, Peanut Butter Chocolate, Cookies N Cream, Toasted Coconut and Red Velvet.
But just because a flavor is offered that day doesn’t mean that they aren’t sold out. So I call. The Sweet Tooth Fairy rotates in like five or so specialty flavors. You’ll usually see these on the middle and bottom shelf. You can see The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s list of flavors on her Web site here. The specialty flavors are pretty cool: Banana, Blueberry, Cotton Candy, Cheesecake, German Chocolate, Grasshopper, Gumball, Lemon, Raspberry Lemonade, Tres Leches, Vanilla Chocolate, Black & White, Carrot, Cinnamon Sugar, Chocolate Chip, Cherry, Dulce De Leche, Key Lime, Mocha, Orange, Pina Colada, S’mores and Toffee n’ Chocolate.

Cheesecake Cupcakes - The Sweet Tooth Fairy (Provo, Utah)

Anyway, I’m in love with this flavor that is totally new to me. This is the first time I’ve seen it at The Sweet Tooth Fairy (and I go a lot). I chatted with the Sweet Tooth Fairy and here’s what she told me about her Cheesecake Cupcake:

a) she tried cheesecake for the first time at the age of 18. ever since then she has been a cheesecake freak!
b) the sweet tooth fairy plans to sell “real cheesecake” but until that time she figured they needed to introduce a lil’ bit of cheesecake love to the bake shop (I’m so glad they did!)
c) megan, the sweet tooth fairy start fiddling around with some of her basic recipes, adding cream cheese and what not and VOILA! The frosting used on the cupcake cheesecake isn’t The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s signature frosting it is as megan would say “striaght up cream cheese frosting” without their secret blend of extracts to maintain a truer cheesecake taste.

so there you have it folks. stop reading and start eating this amazing cheesecake cupcake!

Cupcakes + Shakes = Cupcakes

Bread and Butter
Peanut Butter and Jelly
Spaghetti and Meatballs

Cake and Ice Cream….wait…..Cupcake and Ice Cream!

There are few things that go together so well.

Today on Facebook I happened to notice Megan, The Sweet Tooth Fairy mention a new little venture she was about to make in the cupcake world. It was the CupShake! I was intregued. I had to know more. AND most importantly I HAD TO TRY A CupShake!
Picture 47Picture 48

I quickly found out The Sweet Tooth Fariy would be teaming up with local fave, Sammy’s Cafe. Now, Sammy’s Cafe as you should know is well-known for their PieShakes. (Read more here) That’s right you read that those two words in the same sentence. A full-freakin-slice-oh-pie in a shake. Apparently Megan and Sam (Owner of Sammy’s Cafe) have a mutual friend and before you know it, they are collaborating on a gem of an idea – the CupShake.

Seriously who wouldn’t like a whole cupcake blended into a delicious soft serve ice cream shake? it’s the best of both worlds.

Literally hours later after having found out this discovery, I was down at Sammy’s Cafe to try my first CupShake. I’m a lucky girl!

The result? I was uber impressed. (Smile.)

I think it is a delicious and fun way to eat a cupcake in the summer…and um…really anytime.

Before I get into how they make a CupShake. I must say that this was my first time going to Sammy’s. I hate to admit that I had not been there. It’s sort of embarrassing that I have not since I scope out all the new local places. But for some reason every time I tried to go just didn’t work out. And every time I heard reports from friends and family going I was so jealous. Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. I actually tried a burger and fries while I was there and I liked it. Even more so I just loved the atmosphere.

Sammy's Cafe sign inside (Provo, Utah)

Sam the owner was a cool guy and gave off a good vibe. (…it makes me want to support this place even more)

Okay so. So let’s get into how a CupShake is born.

It’s simple math really:

Cupcake + Shake = CupShake

Begginnings of a CupShake (Sammy's Cafe in Provo, Utah)

We begin by filling our cup with some of Sammy’s smooth soft serve vanilla ice cream.

Picture 45

Then we add a delicious cupcake from the one and only Sweet Tooth Fairy. (pix yanked from Sweet Tooth Fairy’s blog..thx ;) )

Looks like some workers are gazing at the cupcakes, I don’t blame them. If this would have been me, I would have ran off with one before they could have ever gotten it into the shake. I bet they couldn’t decide which flavor to make next. So many choices…and they were all so good!

Okay, let’s plop that cupcake right in!

CupShake

Strawberry Shortcake CupShake

um yum! Strawberry Shortcake!

now get that silver splash protector thing on so we don’t make or mess!

Then blend (i’m not sure if this is the term they use)

and blend some more!

And blend…you gotta get these CupShakes perfect!

Then voila! A CupShake!

I was able to try all the flavors they made today. These flavors included:

* Double Fudge
* Strawberry Shortcake
* Coconut
* Key Lime Pie
* Carrot Cake
* Raspberry Lemonade
* Chocolate Mint (Grasshopper)
* Lemon
* Peanut Butter Chocolate

CupShakes
I think that covers it. My favorites were definitely the Peanut Butter, Carrot Cake and Strawberry Shortcake.

Everyone in the shop at this time was able to sample these and it was fun to see their reactions. They were definitely positive. I just loved hearing Megan and Sam get excited about their favorites. Megan would just get this look on her face, knowing the flavor worked and Sam would proclaim, “Now that’s legit!”  It was dang cool to see these business owners collaborate. I’m telling you friends, I think this CupShake thing is a gem!

So you want to try one? Well if you are local you can! (and if your not local, heck, blend one up yourself and let me know!)

Head on over to Sammy’s tomorrow night! They’ll have live music and samples of CupShakes!
CupShakes will be a regular on the menu, prices and flavors will be announced soon!

The Sweet Tooth Fairy & Sammy's Unite = CupShakes (Sammy's Cafe in Provo, Utah)

These two are brilliant! I seriously think the CupShake will be the next huge trend in cupcakes…cause really…who doesn’t like cake and ice cream? eh?

CupShakes!!!

Look what gem of a wall post I found on facebook this morning!

Picture 39 If you are not familiar with Sammy’s Cafe. It’s a local burger and shake eatery in Provo. They are famous for their pieshakes, meaning they stick a whole freakin’ slice of pie and blend it into the shake. Read more about it on Your Heart Out.

Now, the brilliant Sweet Tooth Fairy is combining her efforts to make a CupShake! I can only imagine that a CupShake will have a whole cupcake in the shake. I want the double chocolate fudge or dulce de leche NOW.

BAHHHHH! I’m so excited. This can’t come soon enough!

This is totally going to be a new trend in cupcakes…i can see it now!

Babycakes Cupcakery at Primrose Retreat: Photo Tour

Have you been down to the Babycakes Cupcakery at Primrose Retreat in Spanish Fork Canyon? Yes? No? Either way, join me on a photo tour.

Primrose Retreat is a spa that also houses a bistro and obviously a cupcakery…they even have gelato now. The area that you’ll see is the bistro where you can eat your cupcakes.

Primrose often runs specials that include their services with a cupcake. And seriously, who wouldn’t love a pedi and a cupcake?

Cinnamon Coffee Cake by The Sweet Tooth Fairy

I had a chance to try The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s Cinnamon Coffee Cake Cupcake. After one bite I was filled instantly with Nostalgia…it reminded me of Sunday morning coffee cake, churros from Disneyland and the comfort of cinnamon sugar. You must try this new flavor! It is an old family recipe that The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s family made during the holidays!

Blue Lemon Bistro Cupcakes

I finally had a chance to sneak on over to Blue Lemon Bistro to try their cupcakes.

Verdict? I like. And I think they are smart.

Why? Read on…

Blue Lemon Bistro Cupcakes and Treats (Highland, Utah)

Because Blue Lemon’s frosting is very different than other cupcakes in Utah County and Utah as a whole.

See, they use swiss meringue buttercream

I tried all three flavors they had available (though there were more combinations of those flavors). my favorite was the raspberry lemonade cupcake and the chocolate frosting that came on the chocolate cake.

oh yeah. the food is great, too. best lettuce (besides pizzeria 712) i’ve had since living in nyc.

Flavor Poll – The Sweet Tooth Fairy

picture-11The Sweet Tooth Fairy and her helpers have been whipping up loads and loads of new flavors at the bake shop. In the last couple weeks I’ve seen or tried the following flavors:

* Key Lime (her bro recommended it to me and I LOVED IT)

* Raspberry (very cool and light frosting..and moist moist cake)

* Strawberry Shortcake (not sure if this was new or not)

* Orange Roll

* Cinnamon Coffee Cake

* Lemon Chiffon

And…she just stuck a poll on her blog to ask YOU what flavor you would most like to try. So go here to vote and help the Sweet Tooth Fairy decide what delectable cupcake to make. The poll is on the blog’s left-hand side column…you’ll need to scroll down a bit to see it.
