Bite into a Cupcake Tonight – Twilight Eclipse Cupcakes

Twilight Eclipse cupcakes at The Sweet Tooth Fairy in St. George, Utah Flavors left to right, Edward: vanilla with vanilla frosting and a shimmer topping, Bella: red velvet with cream cheese frosting, Jacob: chocolate with chocolate frosting covered in graham cracker crumbs.

The Twilight Saga is just as popular, if not more than cupcakes these days. ‘Twihards’ will be visiting theaters for midnight screenings of Eclipse tonight. These crazy fans will most likely be adorned in black, red, and white and perhaps fangs. One can only hope they’ll have a cupcake in hand. Several local bakeries are participating in the vampire and werewolf rivalry. You can walk into The Sweet Tooth Fairy St. George location and choose Team Edward or Team Jacob, by selecting cupcakes with Twilight-themed cupcake toppers. So Cupcake in Salt Lake City is offering the ‘Jacob Six Pack’, a six pack of dark chocolate cupcakes. Other bakeries may not have Twilight cupcakes in their cases but are accepting custom orders. To know for sure, check out the Utah Loves Cupcakes Cupcake Locations list and give your local Utah cupcake bakery a call.

Media Mogul/Billionaire is a fan of Utah’s Sweet Tooth Fairy!

The newest location for The Sweet Tooth Fairy opened last weekend in the Foothill area of Salt Lake City. And um…someone special was there…

Here’s the full story from the Salt Lake Tribune:

Billionaire mixes with cupcakes, Utah customers

Sumner Redstone » Owner of CBS, Viacom attends opening of new SLC pastry store

by Tom Harvey

It’s not often that the opening of a cupcake store in Utah is attended by a media mogul who is one of the world’s richest men.

But there was Sumner Redstone on Friday chewing away on some of his favorite pastries as the Provo-based Sweet Tooth Fairy opened its doors at Foothill Village in Salt Lake City, the fourth store of an expanding chain.

The owner of CBS and Viacom, two media giants, said he started asking for the cupcakes and cakebites (candy-sized cakes) after he saw them featured on the Rachael Ray show on the Food Network, which is owned by Viacom.

“Their content is wonderful, like CBS,” said the network’s owner.

Sumner toured the small store, gazed into the cases and nibbled on cakebites while filming a news promo for the local CBS affiliate, KUTV Channel 2.

The 87-year-old Sumner shares the No. 400 spot on the Forbes ‘ list of the world’s billionaires. The magazine lists his net worth at $2.4 billion.

Megan Faulkner Brown, Tooth Fairy CEO, said Sumner or his staff had been phoning occasionally asking for shipments of cupcakes and cakebites. So when the company was planning the grand opening of its latest store, she asked Redstone if he would attend.

He did.

Faulkner Brown said she learned to bake from her mother, who ground her own wheat and baked bread and goodies for five children.

“I can still hear the sound of wheat grinding on Saturday mornings,” she said.

From her father, she inherited an entrepreneurial streak.

Faulkner Brown, a former staffer for former U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon, said she had been running a home-based sweets business when her husband got laid off. They decided to go full time into the cupcakes (and cookies and brownies) business. The company opened its first store in January of 2009.

“I didn’t want to live my life with ‘coulda, woulda, shoulda,’ ” said the 29-year-old mother of three small children.

They have since opened stores in Draper and St. George and plan two more in Utah. The company has been using investor monies for the expansion.

Asked his favorite, Sumner picked the coconut cake.

But, he quickly added, “I think it’s all tasty.”

Cupcake Trends: Chandeliers in Cupcake Shops

Ever since I started this blog I’ve noticed that many, okay…most…cupcake shops have some sort of chandelier in their store. Have you noticed? I mean, why not? You have to have some sort of lighting and a way to make your shop your own…why not use a chandelier?

Take a peek at some cool chandeliers and cupcake shop decor in Utah’s cupcake bakeries.

I’m not quite sure what Babycakes Utah looks like currently. But this is where I used to eat cupcakes when they had their bistro and cupcakery inside of Primrose Retreat. I think this area may now be a reception center. Either way, there is a chandelier.

Flavor Review: Creme Brulee Cupcake

I’m freaky in love with crème brulee. I don’t have it near enough because all my fat and carb calories are spent on cupcakes, so when I read on Twitter that The Sweet Tooth Fairy was making crème brulee cupcakes I was interested to say the least!

Creme Brulee Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo/Draper, Utah

What exactly is brulee? And more importantly how would The Sweet Tooth Fairy work her magic and pull it into cupcake form? A few things were for sure, I knew it had to be torched, it had to have real crème brulee in it (I wouldn’t settle for a “this is crème brulee flavor” crap) and well it had to be true to The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s style.

For those of you reading that are not familiar with crème brulee (gasp!). Let me introduce you to this eggy, yet-not-so-eggy-if-done-the-right-way, wonder! Crème brulee is a dessert consisting of a rich custard base with a contrasting crackly layer of sugar on top, which has been torched or broiled. It has the most wonderful caramel flavor that could spin your taste buds into a crazy oblivion. Crème brulee actually means “burnt cream” in French and after tasting it you’ll understand that this kind of burnt isn’t necessarily a bad thing!

Creme Brulee Cupcakes from The Sweet Tooth Fairy (Provo & Draper, Utah)

So how did The Sweet Tooth Fairy accomplish the task of bringing all the wonderful flavors and textures of this French classic into a single-serving cupcake dessert?

Creme Brulee Cupcakes from The Sweet Tooth Fairy (Provo & Draper, Utah)

First off, The Sweet Tooth Fairy conquered the sought-after caramel flavor throughout the cupcake, starting in the form of the cake, the batter itself is caramel-based. (I’m raising my hands for joy.) If I’m correct, it is the same batter used in their dulce de leche cupcake, which you know I’m a fan of!

Next, I was happy to see that The Sweet Tooth Fairy did not ignore the fact that real crème brulee must be incorporated. Even better, the cupcake is filled with it! It’s a pleasant change in texture, still smooth and creamy like you’d get from the real deal. My only complaint: I wish it didn’t take a couple bites to reach the center. (Or do I just have a small mouth?)

Creme Brulee Cupcakes from The Sweet Tooth Fairy (Provo & Draper, Utah)

My favorite part of the entire cupcake was the topping. The frosting is a brown sugar meringue that is light and rich with that buttery brown sugar flavor I crave; a nice addition to their current menu, if I do say so. Then to go even further, it has been topped with sugar and torched just like the classic dessert. Seriously, how fun is it to know that the little beauty had a flame to it? (Could it be my inner pyro?)

This cupcake stays true to The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s concept, which is bringing super yummy treats in all their variety and transforming them into cupcake form! She also brings a bit of nostalgia into the project. Growing up The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s mother, we’ll call her Grandma Sweet from now on, made her fair share of crème brulee and its not-so-distant-cousin, flan. The STF’s brother,  (sorry I don’t have a fun nickname for you yet…and don’t worry it won’t include any sort of fairy verbiage) had the idea to experiment with the flavor. Huge success! Bravo.

Creme Brulee Cupcakes from The Sweet Tooth Fairy (Provo & Draper, Utah)

So next time you are in The Sweet Tooth Fairy search that bakery case for the torched-top cupcake and be prepared for a delicious cupcake that brings you right into the crackly, caramel-ly and up-scale sweetness that is crème brulee.

Draponians get ready to be addicted…

People of Draper consider this an official warning.
You will be addicted. You will visit often and you will crave.

Today marks, what I believe, to be a soft opening day at The Sweet Tooth Fairy Draper location. (Grand opening is March 27))

The location is perfect, right next to In ‘n Out. Burgers and cupcakes… that’s how I’ll roll when I hit the new digs up.

I’m hoping to go super super soon..and believe you me, I’ll give you the full report. Maybe a video too?

So a few suggestions for all you new comers to The Sweet Tooth Fairy

Suggestion #1: Get a cake bite. (Double Fudge is my favorite!) I know, I know…this blog is all Valentine Cake Bites by the Sweet Tooth Fairy!about cupcakes. Do you think I care? I can’t make a trip to The Sweet Tooth Fairy without purchasing at least two 5-packs of these puppies. They are quite possibly one of the best treats I’ve ever tasted. In fact, the reason why I get two packs is because I can no longer share with my husband. It’s the truth. Reality bites… Cake bites that is!

The Sweet Tooth Fairy sells cake bites in lots of flavors, but if it’s your first time trying them go for the Double Fudge. It’s the most popular and was featured on the Rachael Ray show. I also am a fan of the pumpkin cake and red velvet cake bites.

If you don’t buy a cake bite. I don’t think we can be friends. Really.

Sweet Tooth Fairy - cupcake display case

Suggestion #2: Get more than one flavor of cupcake. Why? Because it’s fun people. You don’t go to a bake shop to skimp out. If they have the Cheesecake Cupcake available. GET IT! This is my favorite cupcake they offer.

Cheesecake Cupcake in a Cup-a-cake (at Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo, Utah)They’ve got tons of cupcake that are offered daily at The Sweet Tooth Fairy. Want to make sure they have your favorite flavor? Just call ahead, check their facebook page or twitter account. They are friendly people!

Other flavors I suggest trying are their signature VaNIElla that has crazy cool frosting that has hits of almond, coconut and vanilla in one shot. Seriously don’t know how they do it and I don’t want to get mad about the fact that I can’t figure it out…so I’ll stop thinking and writing about it now.

I also recommend any of the new cupcake mashups. Read my full-on review with pretty pictures for more details. Strawberry cheesecake is off the wall!

Suggestion #3: Go with a friend and have fun. Soak in all the details of the bake shop. I personally have no clue what this location looks like yet. (so don’t get made if they don’t have some of these things) But I’m sure it’s close to the adorable Provo store. Browse the cupcake and baking paraphernalia…you may end up with cupcake liners, glovables, an apron or a T-shirt (like I just bought!). Browse the Sweet Tooth Fairy’s cakebooks, look at their menu, take pictures and have fun.

BYU Cupcakes – March Madness – Freaking Out!

BYU cupcakes by The Sweet Tooth Fairy.

I’m simply freaking out at the moment as I watch the BYU vs Florida game online!

We are in double overtime.

Go Cougs!

Please freaking win!

MashUps and Newer Flavors at The Sweet Tooth Fairy

The Sweet Tooth Fairy has been up to some very sweet things! She’s come up with something that I consider brilliant. It’s called the cupcake mashup!

Wondering what a Cupcake MashUp is? Here’s how The Sweet Tooth Fairy describes them:

“We’re taking our most delicious stand-alone flavors and mashing them up with other decadent flavors to create the perfectly paired cupcake!”

Here’s why I think it’s a brilliant idea.

A) new flavors are the best – they keep things interesting and customers wanting to try more!
B) the sweet tooth fairy is able to come up with a new flavor without exhausting more resource. see it’s not just “another” cupcake flavor that has a different kind of frosting. It’s a whole new cupcake (to me!)
C) it’s fun. sounds cool. and looks cool! TASTES good!

New Cupcake flavors from The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo, Utah (Mash ups)

This is the box of cupcakes that I received from The Sweet Tooth Fairy for review. It’s pretty isn’t it?

You should know the background behind this cupcake innovation! See, Megan Brown, the owner of the Sweet Tooth Fairy is a huge fan of the TV show, Glee.  (see this awesome glee cupcake they did!) She’s particularly taken to their musical mashups and says,

“One night when we when we were watching Glee, I had a major culinary epiphany! I thought we should mashup some of our cupcake flavors!!! So, we just started trying it out… It took some time to nail down since each recipe/batter is so different, but after much mashing, we’ve got the recipes dialed in.”

Now they have a whole slew of Cupcake MashUp flavors that they are baking on a regular basis. They’re doing flavors like Raspberry Cheesecake, Chocolate Raspberry, Chocolate Cherry, Mango Raspberry, Peaches and Cream, Lemon Lime, PB & J, Chocolate Strawberry, Chocolate Cheesecake….and more!

New Cupcake flavors from The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo, Utah (Mash ups)

Now let’s talk about the cupcakes I got to try! Note: not all of these are Mashups, some are just newer flavors that I tried.

Cupcakes left to right, top row first: Strawberry Colada, Blueberry Cheesecake, Strawberry Cheesecake,

New Cupcake flavors from The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo, Utah (Mash ups)

isn’t this a rockstar line up? you can really see how these cupcakes are “mashed up” Especially the strawberry cupcake and cherry cordial.

Let’s break it down. Here’s what I thought about each flavor. You’ll get a smattering of my husband’s thoughts since he most always with me for these. :) We have fun!

Blueberry Cheesecake Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo, Utah

Blueberry Cheesecake

*Smells like blueberry cheesecake ice cream that I’ve had at the BYU Creamery. :) (love that place!)
*Cake looks like a muffin
*Frosting looks like blueberry cream cheese that I loved on my bagels growing up (also a good thing)

How did it taste?
It tasted like real blueberries. Love, loved the texture, especially the top of the cupcake.

I couldn’t taste the cheesecake as much as I’d thought I would. For a split second it reminded me of yoplait blueberry yogurt that may or may not be a good memory. (i swear that was in my brown bag lunch like 3/5 days of the week in junior high!)

Admittedly, when I did this tasting (in January) it was not my favorite from the group. I wrote in my review book “I could take it or leave it.” But for some reason I’ve been thinking about this one the most? I have to try it again!

Black Cherry Cordial Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy Bake Shop in Provo, Utah

First off this cupcake just LOOKs cool! You can see the two cupcake flavors very well and the chocolate stripes on top of the cupcake are very zebra-ish! The cherry is fun and a true Sweet Tooth Fairy Look.

Smells like a box of cherry cordials. I’ve got lots of memories from this since my dad always had these around during Christmas.

How did it taste?
Every part of this cupcake really combined chocolate and cherry. I liked the drizzle–I liked. I think there could have been more cherries inside of the cupcakes. And final words of this cupcake from my notes: “If you don’t like cherry cordials, you won’t like this cupcake. If you love cherry cordials, you will love this cupcake.” Then i wrote, “liked” which means i liked this cupcake.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo, Utah

This was the first cupcake I tried that night. I thought it was very pretty.

How did it taste?
I loved the addition of the mini chocolate chips. (I usually don’t care about chocolate chips on my cupcakes) These were soft and nice and went well with the perfectly baked edge of the cupcake…which acutally looked like the rim of a chocolate chip cookie.

The cake was moist. It took me a few bites to realize there was a clump of cookie dough in the middle. I thought it was a good idea too that there were mini chocolate chips throughout the cupcake too.

The cupcake was very mild. The frosting was a cream cheese base. This was a smart choice, I think that the Sweet Tooth Fairy’s signature frosting would probably been too sweet. The cream cheese frosting brings a tang to balance the cake’s mildness and subtlety.

Strawberry Colada Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy Bake Shop in Provo, Utah

This cupcake was probably the biggest surprise of the bunch. It was definitely in a different sphere. On the outside the two cupcake batters were layered and “mashed.”

How did it taste?
This cupcake tasted just like some yummy strawberry daquiris (virgin of course) that my mom made for me growing up. You know those bicardi mixer brands? :) The cupcake is absolutely tropical. It tastes different and delicious. You get all those great flavors like pineapple, strawberry and coconut…it really threw me off guard in these darn winter months.

This was my husband’s favorite of the group. He said, “…it’s unlike any other cupcake I’ve tasted…which is very good!”

Strawberry Cheesecake Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy Bake Shop in Provo, Utah

Alrighty, we are moving into my top two favorite Cupcake Mashups! Naturally they have an irresistable element to them: The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s Cheesecake Cupcake. (my all time fave cupcake from STF)

This smell is amazing! It’s exactly like the strawberry topping my mother makes to go on our Christmas morning waffles. These are pretty and very pink…and even have some goodness drizzling down the sides. I loved the texture and fresh strawberry on top!

Raspberry Cheesecake Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo, Utah

I think this was my very favorite. I would absolutely order this cupcake and even give it as a gift! I loved the real raspberries…you even get the seeds. I really don’t feel the need to pick this cupcake a part because I really just loved it and enjoyed eating it. Um…I loved the touch of graham crackers dusted on top, too!

The husband said it had a really nice feel at the end, sort of reminiscent of a jello poke cake he grew up eating.

Now just more great pix of these cool cupcakes!

Cupcakes from The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo, Utah

Okay, here are some others that weren’t in the sample box…but I have to mention them!

Overall these new Cupcake MashUps are very promising. I found them to be a breath of fresh air and a way to jolt The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s current flavor offerings.

As mentioned before I find it to be a very wise move. It’s a good solution to adding new flavors to a cupcake menu. Sometimes bakeries will just plop a new flavor of frosting on a cupcake and say they have a “brand new flavor.” Plus on the bakery business side it can help a bakery go through/use current ingredients and recipes in a new way!

The Sweet Tooth Fairy is an innovator. She’s always trying new things and never afraid to do so! I love this MashUp concept!

The Sweet Tooth Fairy: VaNIElla Squared

Vanilla Cupcake Week has officially been extended as a two week experience.

The opening of The Sweet Tooth Fairy first location in Provo was probably one of the biggest motivators for me to begin this blog. (See this post) I remember getting so excited and sneaking a peek at the location that I knew I would be visiting countless time for sweet tooth fixes. Then I remember Megan, The Sweet Tooth Fairy contacting me and having me try her cupcakes.

I have so much good to say about this bake shop. There is such a huge vision behind it and there are so many sweet treats that come along with the story.

We’re going to focus on VaNIElla Squared. And um, it hasn’t always had that name, or at least that spelling. Before we go further, let’s take a look at it:

VaNIElla (Vanilla) Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy Bake Shop in Provo, Utah

Yum. I also find it very pretty.

The Sweet Tooth Fairy's Vanilla Vanilla Cupcake (Provo, Utah)

Here’s a pix the vanilla cupcake before it had a special name. I think this was taken the week The Sweet Tooth Fairy opened her doors.
Here’s the story of why The Sweet Tooth Fairy named her most classic cupcake VaNIElla Squared.

“Last week, it was brought to our attention that Stephanie Nielson, a remarkable woman who has inspired and lifted thousands of us across the country for years, loves our Vanilla Squared Cupcakes. She even posted about them on her blog the NieNie Dialogues . She jokingly mentioned that she thought we should “name it vaNIElla squared because I can guarantee I will single-handedly keep that cupcake selection going.”

After a few email exchanges with Stephanie, we learned that she was “ecstatic” and “touched” about the idea. As such, we have officially changed the name of our “Vanilla Squared” cupcakes to “VaNIElla Squared.” We figured the gesture would be a ‘sweet’ little legacy for her–who has candidly taught so many of us about the joys of life/motherhood. Her attitude, faith, honesty, outlook, understanding of what’s important is so inspirational and so appreciated.

Her story is truly remarkable…you can read it here.”

Wasn’t that sweet? The Sweet Tooth Fairy bake shop has even held fundraisers for Stephanie Nielsen and her family.

Vanilla Cupcakes "VaNIElla Squared" - The Sweet Tooth Fairy (Provo, Utah)

Let’s get down to it. My review and thoughts about this classic flavor made by The Sweet Tooth Fairy.

The first thing I did when I opened up my cupcake box was smell the VaNIElla Squared cupcake. It’s smells good and I’ll describe what I smelled in one word: amaretto. That’s what comes to mind. I know you must be thinking, “What? Shouldn’t you be saying you smelled vanilla?” Well, no. See VaNIElla Squared is absolutely a vanilla cupcake, but what makes it special is how it varies from the traditional take on the vanilla cupcake. That difference being the frosting.

For me, the cake (though very good) is merely a vehicle to the frosting on this cupcake. (I could very well say this for MANY of my favorite cupcake flavors at various cupcake bakeries) The frosting is a complete mystery. The Sweet Tooth Fairy has told me she uses four different type of extracts in her frosting. All a secret.

My guess: amaretto, vanilla, coconut and shoot, who knows! When I did a tasting with The Cupcake Activist she guessed there was marzipan in it. The consistency of the frosting is great. Thick but not to heavy. You’ll notice in the first photo that it looks like some air bubbles have popped. I think this gives it such a cool homemade look. :) I love it.

The second element I paid attention to was the feel of this vanilla cupcake. Holding it it felt light and bear with me, almost squishy. (I say that with love) I only mean that if chosen, my little hands could squish the heck out of this cupcake’s cake into a tight ball real quick.  It really is a light, moist cake. The greatest thing about the cake being light is that it can still hold the frosting. The vanilla flavor in the cake pulls through mildly, but I get more of a spongy yellow and buttery cake as opposed to a strong vanilla.

You can spot the VaNIElla Squared cupcake from a mile away because of the sweet little candied cherry on its top. You’ll also notice that the cupcake that the Sweet Tooth Fairy is holding in her logo has a cherry on top. I’d like to think that she’s holding the VaNIElla Squared. Okay, I just double checked on her site because she has an updated logo and it’s now a cake. But it used to be a cupcake. I guess I’ll now say that it’s a VaNIElla Squared cake.

I’ve become more of a fan of this cupcake since November. I used to think it was good but just too sweet for my liking.  (That’s why I probably stick to my usual order of the Double Fudge Cake Bites, Cheesecake Cupcakes and others I find more balanced.) But I proved myself wrong. I don’t find it too sweet anymore, in fact, I think the next time I head to The Sweet Tooth Fairy I’ll probably buy this cupcake.

Oh and this reminds me about a post I need to write. The title will be “Why all cupcake reviews are subjective” or something to that matter. Oh man…I will go off on this one. I seriously have strong feelings that each time you consume a cupcake you will have a very different experience depending on mood, level of hunger, who you are with, environment, etc. But I’ll save that for later.

5 Cupcake thangs to do in Utah this Weekend!

Okay, so I’ve slacked off a bit on this blog since Tuesday. Can’t help it, but I’ve been a bit sick.

If your looking for some cupcake thangs to do in Utah this weekend here are my suggestions!

1) Sundance Film Festival – Watch a film, watch celebs and eat a cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy!
The Sweet Tooth Fairy at the Sundance Film Festival
The Sweet Tooth Fairy will be temporarily setting up shop within the Main Street Mall (333 Main Street) in Park City, Utah for the Sundance Film Festival.

2) 101 Gourmet Cupcakes in 10 Minutes – cookbook book signings!

Wendy Paul has made a very cool cupcake cookbook that will save you time, money and give you much praise! I haven’t personally made any recipes from this book yet. (I am so ready to try her rootbeer float one!) But my good friend Elise aka The Cupcake Activist has and you should read what she has to say about it here!

The book is going to give you lots of (101) ideas of how to make gourmet cupcakes, most if not all, I believe are recipes to doctor up a store-bough mix.

Go grab a copy of the book and have Wendy sign it herself!

Here’s the schedule for this weekend’s signings.

January 22 (FRI) 6-8:30 pm OREM COSTCO signing event

January 23 (SAT) 11-2 pm MURRAY COSTCO signing event
Can’t make it? Buy the book on Amazon, here!

Do you own this book? Have you made any recipes? Let me know!

3) Eat the Vegas, Baby! cupcake from Les Madeleines ..or any other cupcake or my non-cupcake favorite Kouing Aman!

Vegas Baby Cupcakes - Les Madeleines in Salt Lake City

One of my favorite cupcakes in Utah is this Vegas, Baby! cupcake from Les Madeleines. It’s a Vanilla Cupcake with Red Hots in the middle. (View the inside here!) Cream cheese frosting with real white chocolate sprinkles. Romina said on twitter yesterday that they have lots of cupcakes right now…so um…take your pick (cupcake menu here) and let me know which one you had. BUT if they have the Vegas, Baby! cupcake…you best take my recommendation!

4) Have a late night cupcake dessert at The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem!
The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah
I know I keep mentioning this dessert cafe. But it’s because I keep falling in love with the idea of it more and more! My husband and I went last weekend after ice skating for a hot cocoa (tell them you want it with spices, like when they did Christmas in a cup!) and a mini chocolate caramel cupcake! Seriously, this is quickly moving up my little “best cupcakes in utah” list!

5) Get excited for Vanilla Cupcake Week on Utah Loves Cupcake!
Vanilla Cupcakes from Mini's Cupcakes in Salt Lake City, Utah (Breakfast at Tiffany's and Pretty in Pink)
Two Vanilla Cupcakes from Mini’s Cupcakes in Salt Lake City

Next week I’ll be putting a HUGE cupcake focus on the vanilla! I’ll be featuring and reviewing various vanilla cupcakes from around Utah. I’m going to attempt to pick my favorite and maybe the best vanilla cupcake in utah. (It’s going to be hard!) I’ll be sharing vanilla ingredients and tips. Most of all, I’d love to hear from you about vanilla cupcakes. (I’m talking to you at-home bakers and cupcake enthusiasts AND you professional cupcake bakers) If you have a great recipe or a review of your own…email me or comment! It’s going to be a fun week!

The Pioneer Woman comes to Utah (hope she likes Utah cupcakes!)

The Pioneer Woman at her SLC book signing w/ The Sweet Tooth Fairy Cupcakes

I have to start out by saying I HAD SUCH A FUN NIGHT last night! I decided last minute (wanted to go all week but had something else schedule…thankfully it opened up!) to head up to Salt Lake to see The Pioneer Woman at her book signing at the Kings English Bookshop in Sugarhouse. It was such a crazy night with a gazillion people. I was able to catch up with some other local bloggers and actually meet Ree – The Pioneer Woman earlier in the signing!

I had been chatting with Megan, THE Sweet Tooth Fairy, via Twitter and she asked me if I would bring some cupcakes and cake bites up to Ree. Megan just had a new little baby and couldn’t quite make it up. So um…hum..YES! Megan is an one of the most kind people (and business owners) you will ever meet and I’m always happy to help, especially since her goodies are delicious. So I brought The Pioneer Woman the following from The Sweet Tooth Fairy goodies:

*Va-NIE-lla Squared
*Double Fudge
*Strawberry Shortcake
*Red Velvet
*Cheesecake (my favorite!)
*Key Lime
* Double Fudge Cake Bites (an addiction of mine!)

utbloggers-pioneer woman

Here I am with some of the local bloggers that met up for the signing. Ree was a delight. She is absolutely classy, witty and just seemed so kind. She seemed very excited about the cupcakes and even said that she may be taking pictures of cupcakes that night. :) She said she had heard of The Sweet Tooth Fairy and her Va-NIE-lla cupcake. The other bloggers had also brought some gifts of Utah-specific products for Ree.

On a side note, I have to say the Kings English Bookshop did a horrible job at anticipating the turnout for the event. It was poorly organized and managed. The staff was well…kinda unkind and I swear they had no clue about the power of blogging. Heather Armstrong aka Dooce was near our group for a while and the “gatekeeper” wasn’t even going to let her see The Pioneer Woman. It was like HELLO do you know who she is! Anyway, looks like the Kings Bookshop did NOT do their research.

But with that said, I had a crazy good time. I’m leaving out some very funny details, like how I got there at like 6:45 pm and didn’t even have a letter ticket to get my book signed, how I was in line for a while with some random people, how I chased PW with cupcakes as she was moving locations and how the book store staff took my one box of cupcakes, saying they’d give them to her with a card (thank goodness I had two boxes), and last how I luckily found April of Sweet Life in the Valley as she and  other local bloggers were about to get hooked up. Great times!

Thanks Pioneer Woman for being so fabulous, for being who you are, for sharing your story with the world, for making amazing meals and for visiting Utah! I love your cookbook already and think I’ll be making a dish this weekend! Hope you enjoy your cupcakes!

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cupcake from The Sweet Tooth Fairy

Here’s a pretty shot of The Sweet Tooth Fairy‘s Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cupcake I took the other day. Don’t you just love how you can tell that the cupcake is pumpkin just by the look of how the cake pulls from the cupcake liner?

…expect to see lots and lots of fun and hopeful unique ideas for fall cupcakes, which include pumpkin cupcakes this month!
