KSL News Report on Mini’s Cupcakes vs. LuAnn’s Cupcakes
More on the cupcake lawsuit between Mini’s Cupcakes and LuAnn’s Cupcakes.
Text below from KSL.com news story:
PARK CITY — A cupcake war is brewing in Utah. Mini’s Cupcakes was the first cupcake maker of its kind in Utah. Its signature cupcake is called the “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” But Mini’s owner says LuAnn’s Cupcakes in Park City has copied her work with the “Tiffany’s Jewels” cupcakes.
Mini’s owner Leslie Fiet says, “She has several cupcakes that are completely different from my cupcakes, but this just happens to be our most popular and most distinctive cupcake that people associate with Mini’s.”
In a lawsuit, Mini’s claims that LuAnn’s has “adopted a strategy and philosophy to intentionally and unlawfully trade off the goodwill that Mini’s has built by infringing Mini’s trade dress rights in the Breakfast at Tiffany’s cupcake.
LuAnn Lukenbach who owns LuAnn’s says she doesn’t want to comment on the case.
Utah’s First Cupcake Lawsuit – Battle of the Blue Cupcake
Blogging about cupcakes isn’t always about sprinkles and sunshine. Sometimes you have stories that aren’t all hunky-dorie. This is the case with the current case between Mini’s Cupcakes and LuAnne’s Cupcakes.
If you remember, back in the middle of April I reported my excitement that Park City had a gourmet cupcake company named LuAnn’s Cupcakes. Read the post here. I also noted that I thought one of their flavors, Tiffany Jewels, look almost too similar to the Breakfast at Tiffany’s cupcake found at Mini’s Cupcakes in Salt Lake City.
No big deal, right?
Wrong. Absolutely wrong.
Check out the latest news:
Looks like this has evolved into the world of paperwork, lawyers and to be exact: trade dress infringement.
Read the details in this Deseret News article.
Peanut Butter Cupcakes in Utah
I love peanut butter! Especially when it’s combined with chocolate, which is usually the case with cupcakes. Here’s a little sampling of the peanut butter cupcakes you can buy in Utah.
As you look take note about how each cupcake bakery does their peanut butter. I’d say most do a chocolate cake with either a chocolate or peanut butter frosting with some sort of chip on top. Others venture into a peanut butter and jelly thang. What is the bet combo? You decide!

And two versions by The Sweet Tooth Fairy. I’m not sure which is the staple or if they just mix it up every once in a while. Either way, I like them!

There are several other cupcake bakeries in Utah that have peanut butter cupcakes but I don’t have photos and I can’t find photos on their facebook galleries or flickr albums. Yet another plug for all you bakeries to upload more photos!

They’ll be doing GIVEAWAYS too, woot woot! They also have a great events tab for fun events going on in Utah and a Local Blogger.

Recap & Recipes: Utah County Food Bloggers Bake Sale!
The much anticipated recap of our Utah County Food Blogger’s Bake Sale post is now up!
The week leading up to and especially the day of was such a whirlwind for me! I think I am now finally recovered. The bake sales in Utah were a great success. Overall we raised nearly 1200. The Utah County sale totaled around $350…not to shabby for our location.
I was really proud of us, the support we had from local bloggers, media and friends and family! It felt great to raise money for Share Our Strength…and to know that we are helping kids around the nation.
We had such amazing support from some local companies to help with donations and what not! Thanks again!

And some pictures from the day.

Traci of Burnt Apple helping some people check out.
(sorry it’s blurry!)

The Sweet Tooth Fairy was sweet enough to donate free cakebites for the first 100 people who donated. YUM!

Free brownies from Shirley J!

My beautiful and fun friend Hailie showing the camera her purchase. She bought some of the Amano Chocolate ice cream I made! I had many friends and family drop by and can’t thank you enough!

The inside of Shirley J. Thanks again Shirley J for letting us have our bake sale at your storefront and test kitchen!

So many cute families came with their kids!
I wish I had more pictures but of course we got busy and of course I don’t have a picture of me. Oh well…the baked goods shoot better anyway!
Here’s a little roundup of treats we sold! I had a chance to taste most of these and they were delicious! We really have some talented food bloggers here in Utah County. Make sure you check out the links to hear these bloggers recap of the day and maybe get their recipes too!

Pots and Pins Cupcakes {Mother’s Day Cupcakes}
Lyndsey of Kitchen DoughDough made these adorable pots and pins cupcakes for her mom last Mother’s Day.
Pots and Pins is the name of her mom’s blog. It’s a food, quilting and everything else blog that is just so cute!
Each cupcake has a cute topper that has to do with her mom’s blog and hobbies: measuring tape, sewing machine, bobbins, threads, scissors and more!
What a cute little tribute in cupcake form for mother’s day!
Make sure to check out Lyndsey’s blog. It’s one of my favorite cupcake blogs in Utah!
Utah Food Bloggers Bake Sale TOMORROW!
The National Food Bloggers Bake Sale is tomorrow! Gosh, I can’t stand it I am so very much excited! It has been in the works for months and I just can’t wait to support a great cause, meet other food bloggers, readers and just plain have fun. Oh, and well….eat some sweet treats of course!
The bake sale is raising money for Share Our Strength (SOS), a national organization fighting to end childhood hunger in the United States. I feel so blessed to be able to participate in a great cause. It amazes me and makes me extremely sad that many children in our country are hungry. I just can’t imagine that pain. So here I am, trying to help these little kiddos one cupcake at a time. I hope you’ll join in the fun!
Utah is having TWO bake sales tomorrow, one in Salt Lake City and one in Orem. I’ll be hosting the Orem location and my friend Maria of Two Peas and Their Pod is heading up the SLC bake sale. I have to give major props to Maria, she is the one who got me involved in this and I’ve had such a fun time working with her. If you don’t know her or her blog. Get to know it now!
Here are the details!

Neapolitan Review….next Thursday
Last night I was putting the finishing touches on my review of this (spoiler) extraordinaire cupcake by Dippidee. After pressing the publish button I encountered a bizarre error page saying it wouldn’t post. Oh it get’s worse…the draft did NOT save.
I’m so sad I can’t even get mad
.
So this review will have to wait until next Thursday. I had to get to bed cause this girl needed her rest for the Food Blogger’s Bake Sale!
Sweet T’s Bake Shop in Spanish Fork
Southern Utah County might just be the next hot bed of cupcake activity in Utah. I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about this area regarding cupcakes lately. Here’s just a smidgen of the news, though a very sweet one.
It’s called Sweet T’s Bake Shop.
It’s run by Tia Trimble, self-proclaimed bake shop princess! She runs the bake shop out of her home, specializing in cupcakes, cakes, and cookies. I’m happy to report she plans on opening her own store front sometime in 2010 in the Spanish Fork area.
She’s documenting all her cupcake flavors, current orders and experimenting on her blog sweettsbakeshop.blogspot.com. And by the looks and names of these cupcakes, I’m pretty interested! Let’s take a look!

Terrific Toffee Cupcake!
The moist cake is made with brown sugar and studded with toffee bits (that melt into buttery pockets of caramel goodness when baked).

Orange Cream Cupcakes
Orange cupcakes studded with vanilla chips, iced with a swirl of orange icing combined with whipped cream.
YUM! This would be a great summertime cupcake at a picnic!

French Toast Cupcake
Tasty maple and cinnamon cake topped with maple buttercream.
They sound delicious, don’t they?
And I’m pretty excited to meet this cute owner. You’ll know that she’s a Disneyland fan the second that you read her blog…even more so, she used to work at Disneyland on the Jungle Cruise! And…that is where she met her husband. Adorable!
She developed this churro cupcake to bring back some nostalgia of yummy that is the Disneyland churro. I myself have lots of fun DL memories watching the fireworks and eating a churro. I’m excited to try this cupcake!

Churro Cupcake
Moist vanilla cake, ribboned with cinnamon and sugar. Topped with a dome of sweet butter frosting and crusted with more cinnamon and sugar.
So far her most praised flavors are her vanilla cupcakes with Sweet T’s classic vanilla buttercream icing as well as a candied pecan cupcake with rum buttercream icing.
I hope to give these a tasting soon and report back. In the meantime, make sure you check out the Sweet T’s Bake Shop blog.

Utah Cupcake Events & Things to Do this weekend! {April 9-11}
There aren’t a lot of “official” cupcake events in Utah this weekend. But I’ve still found some cupcake things for you to do!
1. Vote for best bakery/best cupcake in Utah County on The Daily Herald Web site. I’m not sure there is even a cupcake category, but I know there is a bakery one.
Have a fun time voting…it’s a hard call! We have so many great bakeries around here.
2. Have brunch and cupcakes out on the deck at Diva’s Cupcakes and Coffee.
If the weather this weekend will be nice, you should enjoy a nice brunch on the deck over at Diva’s. It’s such a cool atmosphere and totally unique. I am dying to go soon since it’s been all-too long since I made my last trip.
3. Buy my favorite vanilla, Blue Cattle Truck Mexican Vanilla, that is and make some vanilla cupcakes. (Here’s my go-to recipe!) You can buy it at Bosch Kitchen Center in Orem or the Provo Kneaders. I’m sure there are other places…that is just where I’ve seen it. I love it so much I think I will need to start buying it in bulk.
Have a great weekend! Eat a cupcake!
