Brownies from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah

Morning, everyone. This post is short and sweet–just like the amount of time it will take you to devour a brownie from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe.

Soft with substance, dense and chewy, these brownies host loads of chocolate flavor.  Don’t make the mistake that these treats are an afterthought at the bakery that boasts cake by the slice. They hold their own. These brownies are yummy, and as always The Chocolate makes them in a handful of flavors to please chocaholics in Utah. They’ve got their turtle brownie, mint brownie, Kahlua brownie, fudge brownie and the newest member of the family: the salted caramel brownie–a distant cousin of my favorite chocolate caramel cupcake.

Honestly, how could you resist this brownie?

Hot Chocolate from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem, Utah

It’s a special Valentine-sie love week over here at Utah Loves Cupcakes. Four lucky ULC readers will win a $25 gift certificate to The Chocolate Dessert Cafe. You can enter to win on this post. Hurry–deadline to enter is Saturday, February 11 at 10 pm MST.

There are so many treats I love from The Chocolate Dessert Cafe, it was hard to know what treat to write about next. Then I was inspired by the Chocolate I.Q. Quiz in Food Network Magazine (The Chocolate Issue). By the way, I rocked that quiz. By the way, I love Food Network Magazine. And by the way, I’m off topic.

Question number 14 on the quiz was “Who invented hot chocolate?”  My vast knowledge of chocolate and anthropology told my brain it twas the Mayans. (Really, though, who doesn’t know that? If you love chocolate and don’t know that, shame on you.) The Mayans are most often credited with what is called drinking chocolate.

The Chocolate’s Hot Chocolate (am I sounding redundant yet?) would make the Mayans proud and at the same time please our American palates and tummies. (You know what I’m talking about…those hot chocolates that you feel like you are drinking a melted candy bar and then realize, I might as well be injecting this in my veins.)

What I’m trying to say, is The Chocolate Dessert Cafe‘s Hot Chocolate (redundant again?) finds a great balance between European drinking chocolate and that watery American hot chocolate loved by many 7-11 frequenters (you know who you are…and not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Here’s the deal with @TheChoco’s hot chocolate: It’s made fresh and made to order with their own secret chocolate sauce. It comes in different flavors like regular (nothing added to their chocolate sauce and it’s far better than any other regular hot chocolate), mint, hazelnut and spice. The Chocolate purveys gourmet syrups and has tested the perfect ratio for their mint and hazelnut.

Then there’s their Spice Hot Chocolate…it’s my favorite flavor. It’s known by us regulars as “Christmas in a Cup.” It’s filled with The Chocolate’s own blend of spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and maybe more…right to your cup. From the first sip you are immediately transported to the holidays, all cuddled up in a warm sweater and family laughter.

The Chocolate even throws in some seasonal special flavors. Right now you can try Raspberry Hot Chocolate (which was divine) and Caramel Pecan Hot Chocolate. Chocolate and my favorite nut? Yes, please!

To finish it off and in the words of The Chocolate’s owner, “All our hot chocolates are topped off with real whipped cream and voila…drankened!”

And one last thing. If you don’t have time to hang out and drink your hot chocolate in these adorable mugs, you can get it to go. I recommend this. You can just sip, sip the day away anywhere you want to be.

Have you ever tried The Chocolate Dessert Cafe’s hot chocolate? Which is your favorite flavor?

Cupcake Question: What brings you back?

IMG_2115

Cupcakes and more treats from Blue Lemon Bistro in Highland, Utah.

What makes you a repeat customer at a cupake bakery?

There are several reasons a cupcake lover returns back to a certain cupcakery/cupcake bakery. But what is it for you? Be honest. What makes you a repeat or rather, a loyal customer? It could be a number of things.

Obviously you have to like the cupcake. But it’s more than that. Is it location, distance from your house, customer service, seating? Tell me, friends!

Utahn’s: Give ‘em cupcakes for Valentine’s Day!

IMG_0373

I’ve never been a big-box-of-chocolate-on-Valentine’s-day girl. So naturally, cupcakes are the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for me. This week I stopped by The Cocoa Bean Cupcake Cafe in Provo. Their shop is decked out in Valentine love. I think they did such a great job of promoting cupcakes for V-day. My favorite is this sign on the outside of their store that says “Say you love’em with cupcakes!”

Most other cupcake shops in Utah are also taking pre-orders for Valentine’s Day order. Check out my eh-hem…recently updated Utah Cupcake Locations page for the nearest Utah cupcake bakery/cupcakery near you.

*Note, if I did want a chocolate on Vday, I’d opt for Utah’s local Amano Chocolate in bar form. Or, I’d go with The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s cakebites!

33 Utah Cupcake To-Dos

Hello fellow cupcake lovers.

I’ve decided to take a bit of a cupcake blogging vacation. I’ve scheduled some R&R, will be working on some site upgrades for Utah Loves Cupcakes, working on some exciting new projects (yes they are cupcake related), and overall just give myself a bit of a break. I haven’t given myself one since I started blogging well over two years ago.

I know sometimes when bloggers stop posting for a while some may assume they are having some crisis or something like that. I assure you I am not. I’ll still be eating cupcakes (had an awesome Red Velvet from Cupcake Chic yesterday), making cupcakes and posting a couple times a week on my personal baking blog, Project Domestication. I honestly just want to give myself a break to finish out the summer and come back making Utah Loves Cupcakes an even better place for cupcake enthusiasts.

If you are a Utah Cupcake Bakery or cupcake enthusiast that has urgent cupcake news please leave it as a comment of this post so everyone can see.

Brotherly Love at The Chocolate

It’s not every day that The Chocolate Dessert Cafe adds a new item to their menu. In fact, this is the first permanent addition to the two-year old bakery’s repertoire.

The Chocolate Dessert Cafe in Orem is a dessert lovers dream. It’s located in a quaint historic home on Orem’s State Street, and the cottage is filled with jazzy music, relaxing colors, sweet smells and friendly staff. The warmth and passion for sweet treats shines through on The Chocolate’s menu.

At the Chocolate, vanilla is not just called vanilla, and dark chocolate definitely not dark chocolate.  The owner, Ange Christiansen, pays homage to important people in her life and career through each cake’s name. She has named cakes after her husband (The Husband), her best friend (The Dottie) her bakery mentor (The Veronika) and other people or places that have inspired her lifelong dream of creating cakes by the slice.

“Ever since the bakery cafe opened I’ve been getting grief from my three older brothers,” Christiansen said. “They keep wondering when they will have ‘their’ cake.”

Christiansen finally nailed down a new cake flavor and name which she dedicated to her three older brothers. The new treat is aptly titled “The Brothers.”

And it’s quite fitting. The whipped cream cake is topped with three different berries both tart and sweet: strawberry, blackberry and raspberry. “Three berries for three brothers,” Christensen continued.

The cake is perfect for summer: light and refreshing. It’s reminiscent of strawberry shortcake, but with a bit more refinement. And there is a secret ingredient to The Brothers that Christiansen will never reveal.

As for the three namesakes, they are happy to find their place on their kid sister’s menu.

Like all layer cakes sold at the bakery, customers can purchase The Brothers by the slice ($4.49), and in a Mini Cake (5-inches) for $13 inside the bakery. The cake is also available in a celebration size by special order ($40).  The Brothers has also been translated into cupcake form, which is casually known by the nickname of Berry Licious. The individual-sized treat has the same components as its big brother but instead of layering berries and whipped cream and garnishing with toasted coconut the Berry Licious  is filled with a fresh strawberry and topped with a generous portion of satiny whipped cream then crowned with a raspberry and blackberry.

Depending on how you eat your cupcake, you may or may not notice that when it is cut in half the fresh red strawberry forms a heart shape. Perhaps a sweet symbol of love from a sister to her brothers? Maybe.

The Brothers  will be the newest rotating cake flavor at the dessert cafe. It’s available for purchase on Mondays and Tuesdays, or for pre-order any day of the week. Berry Licious will be available through special order only. You may want to put in a call for it now, it would make the perfect summer dessert for any event.

Take a Peek at Cupcake Chic on Opening Day – Hooray!

Editor’s Note: I’d like to welcome Camille of Make it Work Mom as the guest author on Utah Loves Cupcakes today! I have been out of town for the last two weeks and asked Camille if she would cover the first day of Cupcake Chic‘s soft opening for me. Camille is the perfect go-to gal for Cupcake Chic love.  She’s a huge fan of all things sweet, especially when it comes to Cupcake Chic cupcakes. Thanks for your help, Camille. Let’s get a cupcake together soon!

Finally! The long-awaited, highly anticipated event of opening a retail store for Cupcake Chic has arrived.
July 21st marked the first day of Cupcake Chic‘s soft opening in Orem, UT.

Customers streamed through the store at a steady pace all day long, studying the menu board, and gawking at the cases of beautifully colored and perfectly frosted cupcakes.  For many, it was their first time ever tasting the homemade cupcakes.  Others were returning clientele, who had already had that “party in their mouth” experience and appreciated the convenience of reliving the memories once again.

For Trista and DeAnn, this is a dream come true and they have seemed to bask in the excitement that came from satisfied customers raving about their products.

If you didn’t make it to the opening day, you can still visit any time 10am – 7pm (until they conduct their grand opening).
And I highly recommend the strawberry chocolate, and key lime pie.  You won’t be disappointed! (unless you’re allergic to lime or chocolate)

About Camille and her blog, Make it Work Mom:

Have you ever stopped to realize that your life is a cycle?  A routine?  You wake up, shower, get yourself dressed, get the kids dressed, fix/eat breakfast, check the weather forecast and the traffic updates on the news to prepare yourself for the commute.  Drop kids off at daycare/school, go to work, pick up kids from daycare, come home, make dinner, bathe kids, get ready for bed and go to sleep.  And the next day follows the same pattern (just not necessarily in that order)?

I’ve realized it and have tried to break out of the cycle and research ideas on how to make my time with my girls more meaningful!  My time with them is precious and because I run out of ideas, I’ve created this website as a compilation of activities, thoughts, and ideas that will make my limited time with my kids valuable.  It’s geared towards working moms, single moms (and all moms in general) who want to maximize their limited time with their greatest assets.

I think it’s ok to break out of the routine and still Make It Work, Mom.

Utah Cupcakes in the News: New cupcakery opening in Orem

Update: Cupcake Chic will open on Wednesday, July 21. Printed date in article was wrong.

Looks like Cupcake Chic is set to open on Monday, according to The Daily Herald.

Here’s the article by Genelle Pugmire:

Photo via The Daily Herald

Photo via The Daily Herald by Ashley Franscell

OREM — A visit to Magnolia Bakery made famous by TV’s “Sex in the City” series, has fostered a new business for a Springville mother-daughter duo.

“We’d taken a girl trip to New York City and visited the famous bakery,” said Trista Millette. “We thought it was a lot of fun.”

What Millette and her mother, DeAnn Shields saw and experienced first-hand, was the growth the cupcake fad in NYC and around the country. Millette said that Magnolia basically started the trendy treats 10 years ago when they were wondering what to do with their leftover cake batter.

When they got back to Utah, Millette and Shields started looking up recipes and cupcake information online, and experimenting with all kinds ingredients. “I wanted to do something creative,” Shields said.

It took about a year of experimenting to finally have the tasty treats made to perfection. Then after they figured out all the chemistry and legal requirements, Cupcake Chic was ready to bake.

“We got a website up and going,” said Millette. “Then we contacted new coffee shops in the county and sold them (the cupcakes) on consignment at Jaxies in Spanish Fork, Art City Coffee in Springville, and the Coffee Pod in Provo.”

Millette said after that Brigham Young University’s bookstore contacted them and wanted to sell them in their store. “We went with social media like facebook and it just sprung up from there,” Millette said.

Shields added, “we deliver for birthdays, to the Missionary Training Center, for Valentines Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Cupcakes are fun, clean and portion controlled.”

For two years they have been working out of Shield’s kitchen, but starting Wednesday their new retail bakery shop will open in Orem at 727 E. 1000 South (behind the new theaters at University Mall).

Shields, the director of nursing at Central Utah Surgical Center, said that while she won’t be doing the day-to-day work of the baker, she’s the financial backer of the new store. Millette and seven employees will be at the store baking, selling, delivering and shipping cupcakes all over the country.

“Everything is from scratch,” Millette said. “We use fresh ingredients, fresh fruit, coconut milk, imported chocolate and no artificial flavorings.”

Together the women said they got their education on the Internet, learning chemistry, how baking soda works, about dry air and high altitudes, and more. “There was lots of trial and error,” Shields said. “We’ve made lots of Trifle out of bad cakes.”

The new store will have a New York flare with a “now” motif, according to Shields. Cupcake Chic will also feature a boutique of all things cupcake, from plates to dental floss. “We will have a few tables and an eating bar for in-house cupcake connoisseurs,” Millette said. While cupcakes are the featured product, the bakery will also offer a variety of beverages as well.

Cupcake Chic offers 22 regular flavors and will rotate seasonal flavors like peppermint, pumpkin and eggnog. The bakery will also feature a flavor of the month. Their top selling flavor is Red Velvet, carrying with the national trend. The next three favorites in order are coconut, which Millette says is “a killer,” Key Lime with its graham cracker crust bottom and strawberry vanilla.”

People are so passionate about their cupcakes, Millette said. “One customer told us it’s like Christmas in your mouth.”

“We really want people to know about our gifts and product. Our cupcakes are your standard size,” Millette said. “And we also have minis.”  Shield’s added, “They are also cheaper by the dozen.”

Cupcake Chic hours will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday – Saturday. Call (801) 368-9469 for information or to place orders.

Visit the Daily Herald news site for more info and to see some more cute Cupcake Chic pictures.

NEW Cupcake Bakery in Cache Valley – Temptation Cupcake in Logan

Cache Valley has to be one of the prettiest places in Utah. It get’s darn cold in the winter but head down Sardine Canyon and into Logan this time of year and your eyes will behold some beauty.

Temptation Cupcake, the first cupcakery in Cache County opened last month! Let’s learn a bit more about them via pictures.

Temptation is an all gourmet cupcakery with a bonus sugar cookie. And get this, it is owned by a husband and wife couple. I love that.

Look at the Temptation Cupcake Flavors for today Tuesday, June 8th: Vanilla Squared, Chocolate Squared, Black n’ White, White n’ Black, Coconut, Red Velvet, Chocolate Ganache and PEANUT BUTTER, BLUEBERRY PIE, and their newest flavor, MAPLE.

I seriously don’t know much about this cupcakery, but I plan to report more about their history, concept, ingredients and maybe even a review. I can’t make it up to Logan any time soon so I’m looking for a guest reviewer based in Cache Valley. Email me at utahlovescupcakes(at)gmail(dot)com if you are available and interested to do a review.

Sex and The City 2 Cupcakes by Mini’s Cupcakes in Salt Lake City

Kathy Stephenson, the food columnist for the Salt Lake Tribune has a great blog called Bite by Bite. She recently reported on Mini’s Cupcakes new line of Sex and The City 2 cupcakes.

Here’s what she said:

“Mini’s Cupcakes in Salt Lake City is celebrating the release of the new movie “Sex and the City 2″ with 5 new cupcake flavors.

Bakery owner Leslie Fiet took cocktail  recipes from SKYY Vodka, one of the movie sponsors, and turned them into these cupcake creations. (After reading this Tribune review, these treats definitely sound better than the actual movie.)

Glamour Gal • Lemon cupcake, soaked in vodka, creme de casis and lime juice, frosted with lemon butter creme. (pictured)

Park Ave. Princess • Madagascar vanilla bean cupcake, soaked in lemon-lime soda, merlot and lemon juice, butter creme frosting.

Blonde ambition • Vanilla bean cupcake, soaked in pineapple-infused vodka, triple sec and creme de cacoa with lime frosting.

Red over heels • Red velvet cupcake, soaked in ginger vodka, honey and lemon juice, with cream cheese frosting.

Mr. Manhattan • Dark chocolate cupcake, soaked in Coca-cola and bourbon with a dark chocolate ganache frosting.

In addition, Mini’s also will have the original Carrie Cosmo, a cranberry cupcake soaked in vodka and cranberry juice with lime frosting.

Bijou Market – June 5, 2010

The Bijou Market is this Saturday. I’m a big fan of this artisan’s market. It’s a lot of fun and held at a beautiful location.

National Bakery Week: June 28 – July 4th

I just got this email from the folks over at the Great American Bake Sale.

Great American Bake Sale is holding a National Bakery Week,  June 28 – July 4th. We’ll will be engaging bakeries to help end childhood hunger by featuring an item or donating a percentage of sales. We are reaching out to bakeries to see if they want to help us. A page on our website with more information and a map with participating bakeries will be up starting June 11 (www.greatamericanbakesale.org/bakeryweek). Or go to their Facebook page. (When I clicked on the last link it didn’t work)

We could use a little help with growing our bakery list. If you know of any bakeries in your area that you would like to see participate, send us their contact information! (bakesale@strength.org)

Hope to see some Utah cupcake bakeries participate.

Cupcake Necklace

IMG_3533

I’ve been sporting this adorable cupcake necklace as of late. I found it at The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo. I love it! (I have the white one with red sprinkles)

Head on over to Project Domestication to see the other necklace I’m sporting these days. Hint: it also has to do with the name of this blog.

Mormon Cupcakes: LDS Missionary Cupcakes

I sense a new series of posts dedicated to Utah’s predominant religion, eh? Hello Mormon cupcakes.

Missionary Cupcakes

Let’s start out with these adorable LDS Missionary Cupcakes by The Sweet Tooth Fairy. Each cupcake has either a white short-sleeved shirt and tie, black missionary name tag or a little saying like “I hope they call me on a mission.” It looks like it was a fun custom order to fulfill.

If you have any LDS-themed cupcakes send ‘em my way!
