…and Patina: Utah Valley’s newest handmade market and community art center. Patina makes it easy to find great local, handmade products – and learn how they’re made – by going to just one spot.

Patina is set up like a retail store, where local artists/crafters can sell their creations. We rotate ten artists each week to keep people interested in coming to check the place out. And, starting in January we will have at least one class every week – teaching local artists and artists-in-training everything from knitting and quilting to painting and book binding.

Patina’s grand opening is Wednesday, November 18 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. You’re invited to join that day for free cupcakes, handmade gifts for the first 25 customers and a chance to check out a place everyone will soon be buzzing about.
It will be open 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and is located at 212 S. Main St., Pleasant Grove. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to learn more about our great vendors.

Jewelry. Tile Coasters. Toffee. Hand Bags. Flower Barrettes. Twilight. Fairies. Monsters. Stockings. Apples. Scentsy. Cinnamon Bears. Game Board Bags. Pecan Logs. Advent Calendars. Headbands. Tile Necklaces. Snowman Kits. Belt & Buckle. Christmas Cards.

I haven’t received word what bakery/cupcakery is doing the cupcakes for PATINA, I just know they will be there.

Mini’s Retro Cafe – NOW OPEN!

Okay, I am completely swamped at work…but I have to tell you about Mini’s Retro Cafe
before this work day is over!

I attended the private launch party for Mini’s Retro Cafe last night in Salt Lake City. Mini’s Retro Cafe is the newest addition to soon-to-be cupcake empire of Leslie Fiet, owner Mini’s Cupcakes. ;)

It’s an awesome cafe with comfort food and a space that instantly conjures up memories of my grandma’s house. In an awesome and delicious way! Here’s quick picture recap. Clearly, Leslie thought through the whole “retro” concept and I just have to smile at every little detail that was taken into consideration for the decor and menu.

IMG_8967

I spent the night eating awesome food all made from scratch (besides the spam!).

Caramel Apple Cupcake at Mini's Retro Cafe (Salt Lake City, Utah)

Of course there were cupcakes. I had the chance to try Leslie’s BRAND NEW apple caramel flavor. Amazing!

IMG_8951

loving this chandelier.

IMG_8937

TV trays are conveniently placed EVERYWHERE!

IMG_8922

watch a gazillion retro shows! and i love the art on the walls. can’t remember the artist’s name, but I’m pretty sure everything is for sale.

my favorite corner of the cafe: the luggage.

Black & White Cupcake at Mini's Retro Cafe (Salt Lake City, Utah)

I’m sorry, but cupcakes look awesome in this retro setting! Don’t you love the lamps, furniture and old issues of magazines! That cupcake there is my favorite of Mini’s Cupcakes: the Black & White.

IMG_8894

Here’s a shot of the food we devoured. Gosh, there were so many fun items.

Deviled eggs (my husband’s favorite), homemade mac n cheese (my second favorite), Jello (very good!), egg salad sandwich (MY VERY FAVORITE), pudding in a cloud (husband’s other favorite), pigs in a blanket (with two kinds of huge-mungo sausages), fluffer-nutters (very fluffy) and spam starters (nice, served warm on crackers with swiss cheese and i liked!).

IMG_8925

here’s a shot of  their pudding in a cloud in retro serveware. seriously, just the lighting in these pix is just like my grandma’s. i’m so diggin this.

IMG_8918

my favorite food of the night: egg salad sandwiches. Mini’s Retro Cafe makes their own mayo, which is obvious because these really are delicious.

I think this is a great extension of Mini’s current business concept. All from scratch and just plain good. I’m so happy there is more room to sit and hang out. And as a girl who is freaquently “cupcaking” I appreciate that this cupcakery serves savory food. Oftentimes when I’m out on my adventures, I am chasing the clock to make it to the bakery before it closes…which means I haven’t had dinner. So I welcome a savory pre-cupcake nosh.

Head on over to Mini’s Retro Cafe. Tell them I sent you and live it up. Stay for a while. You’ll feel right at home and totally relaxed. Pull up a TV tray, watch some old episodes of your fave retro show and heck, play a board game.

Kudos to you, Leslie, you’ve created something quite cool! …and as usual…completely delicious!

The Pioneer Woman comes to Utah (hope she likes Utah cupcakes!)

The Pioneer Woman at her SLC book signing w/ The Sweet Tooth Fairy Cupcakes

I have to start out by saying I HAD SUCH A FUN NIGHT last night! I decided last minute (wanted to go all week but had something else schedule…thankfully it opened up!) to head up to Salt Lake to see The Pioneer Woman at her book signing at the Kings English Bookshop in Sugarhouse. It was such a crazy night with a gazillion people. I was able to catch up with some other local bloggers and actually meet Ree – The Pioneer Woman earlier in the signing!

I had been chatting with Megan, THE Sweet Tooth Fairy, via Twitter and she asked me if I would bring some cupcakes and cake bites up to Ree. Megan just had a new little baby and couldn’t quite make it up. So um…hum..YES! Megan is an one of the most kind people (and business owners) you will ever meet and I’m always happy to help, especially since her goodies are delicious. So I brought The Pioneer Woman the following from The Sweet Tooth Fairy goodies:

*Va-NIE-lla Squared
*Double Fudge
*Strawberry Shortcake
*Red Velvet
*Cheesecake (my favorite!)
*Key Lime
* Double Fudge Cake Bites (an addiction of mine!)

utbloggers-pioneer woman

Here I am with some of the local bloggers that met up for the signing. Ree was a delight. She is absolutely classy, witty and just seemed so kind. She seemed very excited about the cupcakes and even said that she may be taking pictures of cupcakes that night. :) She said she had heard of The Sweet Tooth Fairy and her Va-NIE-lla cupcake. The other bloggers had also brought some gifts of Utah-specific products for Ree.

On a side note, I have to say the Kings English Bookshop did a horrible job at anticipating the turnout for the event. It was poorly organized and managed. The staff was well…kinda unkind and I swear they had no clue about the power of blogging. Heather Armstrong aka Dooce was near our group for a while and the “gatekeeper” wasn’t even going to let her see The Pioneer Woman. It was like HELLO do you know who she is! Anyway, looks like the Kings Bookshop did NOT do their research.

But with that said, I had a crazy good time. I’m leaving out some very funny details, like how I got there at like 6:45 pm and didn’t even have a letter ticket to get my book signed, how I was in line for a while with some random people, how I chased PW with cupcakes as she was moving locations and how the book store staff took my one box of cupcakes, saying they’d give them to her with a card (thank goodness I had two boxes), and last how I luckily found April of Sweet Life in the Valley as she and  other local bloggers were about to get hooked up. Great times!

Thanks Pioneer Woman for being so fabulous, for being who you are, for sharing your story with the world, for making amazing meals and for visiting Utah! I love your cookbook already and think I’ll be making a dish this weekend! Hope you enjoy your cupcakes!

Spinkles Cupcake Mix – Pumpkin Flavor

Pumpkin Cupcakes (Spinkles Mix)

I’m a big fan of Spinkles Cupcake’s Mixes. I think they taste great and offer some convenience. So naturally when they roll out a new flavor I I have to try it out! This was no exception for the pumpkin flavor. (I think they had it last year, but can’t remember…anyway, I think it only comes out seasonally!)

I purchased mine at my local Williams-Sonoma in Provo.

Overall I thought the mix produced some nice pumpkin cupcakes. To top them off, Spinkles suggested using one of their cream cheese recipes. It was the perfect fit, becuase the frosting has a hint of cinamon that really tied it into the cake.

The end result, meaning texture of the cupcake surprised me because it really was more like a quickbread than a cupcake. The baking time was even longer than a normal cupcake. But i didn’t mind. It was delicious. I brought the cupcakes to work and they were very well received!

Here’s a little photo journey of my baking adventure.

Empty bowl from Spinkles Pumpkin Cupcake Mix batter.
for some reason i love the way my kitchen aid bowl looks after I scrape out the batter…

Yum yum. I love pumpkin cupcakes! And as i said the cinnamon cream cheese frosting really makes them special!

Here’s a pretty shot of The Sweet Tooth Fairy‘s Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cupcake I took the other day. Don’t you just love how you can tell that the cupcake is pumpkin just by the look of how the cake pulls from the cupcake liner?

CHIP’S Ponch and Jon Cupcake(s) – Minis Cupcakes

CHIPS cupcakes by Minis Cupcakes (Sugarhouse, Utah)

I have to recommend this new cupcake flavor at Mini’s Cupcakes — it’s called CHIP’S Ponch and Jon.

The way it’s described on Mini’s Web site is this:

“A chocolate or vanilla cake with milk chocolate butter creme sprinkled with candy chips”

Woot woot for new cupcake flavors.

I love utah. I love cupcakes. :)

Though the name of the cupcake is centered around the “chips” on top, I think what’s really special about these cupcakes is the milk chocolate frosting! I was really impressed with it. I feel like it was a nice change from the more popular (in my experience) semi-sweet or bittersweet chocoalte buttercream frosting.

Give it a try next time you are at one of Mini’s locations in downtown SLC or Sugarhouse!

Review – The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cupcake by Nicole Rates It

I love finding others’ reviews of cupcakes in Utah. I recently came across the blog, Nicole Rates It. She just tried out The Sweet Tooth Fairy’s Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cupcake. Her rating: 10/10! Wow.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip from The Sweet Tooth Fairy Bake Shop in Provo, Utah

I also gave it a try recenlty and thought it was pretty good and totally fall! I thought the cupcake was very moist, had a great balance of sweetness with the cream cheese frosting and the best part: the milk chocolate chips! YUM! Such a great fall cupcake!
