Diva’s Cupcakes & Coffee – Best Seasonal Dining
City Weekly’s Best of 2009 included Diva’s Cupcakes and Coffee for the Best Seasonal Dining! (i know this is late news…but whatev)

Here’s what they said if you can’t read it in the graphic:
BEST SEASONAL SETTING
Diva’s Cupcakes & Coffee
Whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in your soul, Diva’s domed greenhouse is the destination of choice. Its lush interior, perfumed by narcissus and enlivened by gurgling water, is a restorative space for coffee, scones or a bowl of soup on a bleak day. In spring, when the world is mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful, the adjacent patio invites you into the sun for a boost of serotonin and perhaps a chicken-salad sandwich and one of Diva’s signature gourmet cupcakes. There’s also plenty of interior space, clean and well-lighted, offering the choice of tavern tables or library room with comfy chairs.

Cupshakes tonight at Sammy’s
I’m digging this logo or rather web page The Sweet Tooth Fairy has created for Cupshakes.com!
It’s cute and falls right in line with the look of all her other goodies and branding.

And speaking of Cupshakes…the official kickoff is tonight at Sammy’s. Here’s their invite:

Spend some time out on the patio at Diva’s Cupcakes & Coffee

I’m a fan of Diva’s Cupcakes & Coffee — but there are two problems I have. 1) i don’t live nearly as close as i’d like 2) they are not on twitter, flickr nor do they have a blog. So this makes it a lot harder for me to gather information about them. I promise i’m not lazy. I call in periodically or search online to see what’s new or get the latest flavors…but because of this, Diva’s is not on the front my mind leading to fewer posts/updates about their DELICIOUS cupcakes and AMAZING venue.
My original intention for this post was to share with you a great review I found on YELP of Diva’s Cupcakes & Coffee. All pictures and copy below are from Yelp and credited to the Yelp users Betsy H. and Nick W.
however…i just spent a moment googling some things and just realized they are on Facebook! So this is huge for me! Yay, I can feel more connected to them!
Okay on to the YELP goodness:

Review from Betsy H. on 6/6/09
4/5 stars
I am notorious for my love of cupcakes. So when I recently received an award for being “Employee of the Month”, my boss knew a great prize would be a gift certificate for, naturally, cupcakes.
So, on a balmy Saturday afternoon, with my BFF in tow, I ventured out to Diva’s to use my gift certificate.
The first thing I can tell you about Diva’s is this: You could get lost in this place. For days. (And that’s a good thing.) It is definitely not your run-of-the mill square coffee shop. I actually don’t know how to describe the building, exactly. There is a huge, outdoor dining area, an indoor atrium, a library, as well as your expected general seating areas. Let’s just say there are tons of spots you could hide yourself away with a cup of coffee and a cupcake, and make good use of the free wi-fi for a few hours.
The service was really good. The employees were really knowledgable, and super friendly. I enjoyed talking to them!
And really, it seemed like the prices were really good. For $15.94 we got: 2 cupcakes, a vegetarian hummus wrap (which was huge, by the way), a cup of tomato basil soup, and a generous piece of vegetarian quiche. The price was definitely right.
I should mention that all the food was excellent. The soup was really hot, and a lot better than your typical tomato soup- this was slightly chunky from pureed veggies, and had fresh basil in it. The hummus wrap was divine, with tons of fresh veggies and a thick slice of smoked gouda and was served with a balsamic dip, and the quiche was super tasty.
There were actually a lot of people there, but it didn’t seem crowded, because there were so many seats. It seemed to be a diverse and ecclectic crowd of people. Would make for some great people watching.
I’ll definitely be back.
Great review…and I love her description of the location. It seriously is amazing! Here are more photos:

Blackberry Cornmeal Cupcakes
I made Martha Stewart’s Blackberry Cornmeal Cupcakes right after I purchased her CUPCAKES book a few months ago. I just ran across this lovely photo of the batch before I put them in the oven. Anyone else tired this recipe?
Go to my other blog, Project Domestication, to see the finished cupcakes.

Bake Sale Cupcake – Ice Cream Cone Cupcake
I bought this Ice Cream Cone Cupcake at a bake sale in my neighborhood.
The darling little girl sold it to me for 50 cents.
It seriously was one of the best cupcakes I had all summer!
Cupcakes now served at the Lion House Pantry Locations
A few weeks ago, I tweeted about my discovery that the Lion House Pantry locations (located inside Deseret Book stores) are now serving CUPCAKES!
I snagged the flavors they had that day: German Chocolate, Red Velvet and Peanut Butter and Jelly.
It was seriously a great lunch/treat. I got their famous chicken salad and a croissant and these cupcakes
. I’ve got so many fond memories of the Lion House Pantry/Restaurant and their cookbooks. This was cool to see them come out and serve cupcakes.
Swimmer Cupcakes
Okay, as much as I love fall and as excited as I am to wear scarves and boots—I’m not so sure I want summer to end.
Nothing says summer to me like a great day at the pool!
Wouldn’t it be fun to serve these cupcakes at a pool party! I love the cute boy and girl in swimsuits and pool gear!
Well you could have these at your next pool party cause Dippidee makes them!

Cupcakes + Shakes = Cupcakes
Bread and Butter
Peanut Butter and Jelly
Spaghetti and Meatballs
Cake and Ice Cream….wait…..Cupcake and Ice Cream!
There are few things that go together so well.
Today on Facebook I happened to notice Megan, The Sweet Tooth Fairy mention a new little venture she was about to make in the cupcake world. It was the CupShake! I was intregued. I had to know more. AND most importantly I HAD TO TRY A CupShake!

I quickly found out The Sweet Tooth Fariy would be teaming up with local fave, Sammy’s Cafe. Now, Sammy’s Cafe as you should know is well-known for their PieShakes. (Read more here) That’s right you read that those two words in the same sentence. A full-freakin-slice-oh-pie in a shake. Apparently Megan and Sam (Owner of Sammy’s Cafe) have a mutual friend and before you know it, they are collaborating on a gem of an idea – the CupShake.
Seriously who wouldn’t like a whole cupcake blended into a delicious soft serve ice cream shake? it’s the best of both worlds.
Literally hours later after having found out this discovery, I was down at Sammy’s Cafe to try my first CupShake. I’m a lucky girl!
The result? I was uber impressed. (Smile.)
I think it is a delicious and fun way to eat a cupcake in the summer…and um…really anytime.
Before I get into how they make a CupShake. I must say that this was my first time going to Sammy’s. I hate to admit that I had not been there. It’s sort of embarrassing that I have not since I scope out all the new local places. But for some reason every time I tried to go just didn’t work out. And every time I heard reports from friends and family going I was so jealous. Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. I actually tried a burger and fries while I was there and I liked it. Even more so I just loved the atmosphere.
Sam the owner was a cool guy and gave off a good vibe. (…it makes me want to support this place even more)
Okay so. So let’s get into how a CupShake is born.
It’s simple math really:
Cupcake + Shake = CupShake
We begin by filling our cup with some of Sammy’s smooth soft serve vanilla ice cream.

Then we add a delicious cupcake from the one and only Sweet Tooth Fairy. (pix yanked from Sweet Tooth Fairy’s blog..thx
)
Looks like some workers are gazing at the cupcakes, I don’t blame them. If this would have been me, I would have ran off with one before they could have ever gotten it into the shake. I bet they couldn’t decide which flavor to make next. So many choices…and they were all so good!
Okay, let’s plop that cupcake right in!
um yum! Strawberry Shortcake!
now get that silver splash protector thing on so we don’t make or mess!
hello mr. electro freeze!
Then blend (i’m not sure if this is the term they use)
and blend some more!
look at the other soon-to-be-CupShakes waiting patiently!
You can never have enough ice cream, so let’s add more!
And blend…you gotta get these CupShakes perfect!
Then voila! A CupShake!
I was able to try all the flavors they made today. These flavors included:
* Double Fudge
* Strawberry Shortcake
* Coconut
* Key Lime Pie
* Carrot Cake
* Raspberry Lemonade
* Chocolate Mint (Grasshopper)
* Lemon
* Peanut Butter Chocolate

I think that covers it. My favorites were definitely the Peanut Butter, Carrot Cake and Strawberry Shortcake.
Everyone in the shop at this time was able to sample these and it was fun to see their reactions. They were definitely positive. I just loved hearing Megan and Sam get excited about their favorites. Megan would just get this look on her face, knowing the flavor worked and Sam would proclaim, “Now that’s legit!” It was dang cool to see these business owners collaborate. I’m telling you friends, I think this CupShake thing is a gem!
So you want to try one? Well if you are local you can! (and if your not local, heck, blend one up yourself and let me know!)
Head on over to Sammy’s tomorrow night! They’ll have live music and samples of CupShakes!
CupShakes will be a regular on the menu, prices and flavors will be announced soon!
These two are brilliant! I seriously think the CupShake will be the next huge trend in cupcakes…cause really…who doesn’t like cake and ice cream? eh?

More on CupShakes
Okay, I’m exponentially becoming obsessed with the idea of CupShakes. I failed to mention that The Sweet Tooth Fairy has a post on her blog about CupShakes…WITH PICTURES.

Check it out here! I hope to give you a full review soon!
In the meantime, follow @sweettoothfairy and @sammyscafe and me @DomesticBecky on Twitter!
CupShakes!!!
Look what gem of a wall post I found on facebook this morning!
If you are not familiar with Sammy’s Cafe. It’s a local burger and shake eatery in Provo. They are famous for their pieshakes, meaning they stick a whole freakin’ slice of pie and blend it into the shake. Read more about it on Your Heart Out.
Now, the brilliant Sweet Tooth Fairy is combining her efforts to make a CupShake! I can only imagine that a CupShake will have a whole cupcake in the shake. I want the double chocolate fudge or dulce de leche NOW.
BAHHHHH! I’m so excited. This can’t come soon enough!
This is totally going to be a new trend in cupcakes…i can see it now!
Pretty in Pink Cupcake from Les Madeleines
Last Friday, on my way home from the airport, I made a special trip to Les Madeleines. I know this blog is about cupcakes, but I would be lying if I told you I went their just for Cupcakes. In fact, I went there for the sole purpose of their specialty the Kouing Aman. It’s the best pastry I’ve had in my life. With that said, Les Madeleine does sell cupcakes and I do like them. In fact, I think they were one of the first to have cupcakes here in Utah (Besides Mrs. Backer’s Pastry Shoppe).
I was happy to try their Pretty in Pink flavor. It’s a vanilla cupcake with a raspberry buttercream. It was very good.
When Romina makes a buttercream, she doesn’t mess around. It is in fact a BUTTERcream frosting. No doubt.
I can never decide how I want to photograph the cupcakes I get to enjoy. So here are a few shots of this pretty little cupcake.
I bought the mini and got it to go. I loved how it was placed in a little chinese takeout box.
I love the lighting on this one. the raspberry frosting was delicious. granted very buttery. but delicious, romina uses butter from vermont. i think it’s like a super high percentage of butterfat content. sweet, right!
i loved this pretty plate.
anyway, i grabbed a takeout menu and noticed that they updated (to my knowledge) all their cupcake flavors. they have fabulous names and are all inspired by the chefs travels. i really want to try the one with cardomom. i can’t remember it’s name.
head over to Les Madeleines for a cupcake…and get 6 KOUIN AMANS too!

I’m back, Cupcake Friends, I’m back!
Heya, friends.
I went on an unexpected blogging break. I didn’t plan it. I didn’t try to. It just happened. Life as we know it is fabulous, just extremely busy. I work at a food products company called Shirley J, and we just got done shooting our very first catalog. I’m happy to report I had one of the most amazing professional experiences of my career. I had the opportunity to work closely with some amazing professionals, namely the J.Schmid catalog company, great local photographers and an awesome food stylist. For a while there I was pushing 12+ hour work days and just getting home to eat, maybe workout and sleep. Things have died down a bit, we are in the process of getting all our copy finalized for the catalog, not to mention I’m finishing up our product labels, which has also been a huge task.
Now you are wondering, did Becky have time to even eat a cupcake? YES. In fact, I ate many cupcakes, I just didn’t blog about them. I have lots of exciting news, reviews and guest posts coming up. Please be patient with me.

Photo by fotohok
One of the highlights of my recent cupcakedom was trying The Chocolate’s Caramel Chocolate Cupcake. It was divine! By the way, The Chocolate no longer has a Cupcake Cart at University Mall in Orem (tear tear). Because (drum roll) they are opening a storefront (hip hip)!
I should be posting more regularly again. In the meantime, comment to let me know what you’d like to hear and tell me what Utah Cupcake Adventures you’ve been going on.
