Boy caught on fire from lighting cupcakes…

This is not the type of cupcake news I like to report. But according to ABC4 Utah a young boy caught fire when lighting some cupcakes. I’m hoping cupcakes is like a brand of firework or something but I don’t think so. I’d like more details…but this is all the article said.

Six year old Kevin Nunez is in critical condition Tuesday after being burned while playing with gasoline and a lighter.

The flames incinerated most of the boys red shirt and charred the tops of his jeans. A neighbor who witnessed the accident says, “At first it was just with the lighter, lighting cupcakes. they just got the idea of pulling out the gasoline to light a big fire.”

one flick of the lighter and Nunez was engulfed in flames. Witnesses say his father tried to reduce the burns, “they just stripped him of his clothes and put whipped cream on him.” he was likely trying to cool the boy down, but it’s not something doctors recommend doing.

Pretty bizarre.

Mini’s 2nd location in Sugarhouse OPEN!

Picture 12Looks like Mini’s Cupcakes second location is open! Here’s what owner Leslie Fiet said on their Web site:

“Finally!  I am going to open Monday at 11.  Please come by and say hi and check out our new location.  We are short staffed right now, because I am going to Hawaii with my honey for our anniversary, so we will open at 11 and close when the cuppies are gone.  We need more people, so if you know someone who wants to work part time have them come in.  We are located in Sugarhouse (what a great neighborhood) 1100 east 1751 south.

come say hi!”

Fourth of July Cupcake Flags

I’ve got Independence Day cupcakes on my mind! And I remembered these adorable flags that the peeps over at Your Heart Out designed last year! Aren’t they adorable! I love them. YHO has made them available for EVERYONE to download, right here! I think they would be the perfect addition to the red velvet cupcakes I’ll be making later this week. I wonder what YHO will be posting this year for the Fourth?

Mrs. Backer’s Bakery

Mrs. Baker’s Bakery was recently featured in the Intermountain Catholic News. Be sure to check out the article. You’ll learn a lot about this historic Utah Bakery that has been open since 1941!

Here’s a fun quote:

“The notion behind the wedding cake (can I insert cupcake too!!!) is that the first food you feed one another at your wedding should be sweet. The food should be sweet so that the promises which come out of your mouths may be sweet. The ceremony should be reflected in your vows: Why not promise to share life’s sweetness with one another?”

Be sure to drop by Mrs. Backer’s Bakery. Cupcakes and birthday cakes are their top sellers. Did I mention their cupcakes are gorgeous! (See here) Also know that they sell wonderful cupcake apparel and gifts! Last time I was there my girlfriend bought the most beautiful plate.

Celebrate NieNie’s Birthday at The Sweet Tooth Fairy!

Picture 2

If you haven’t heard already, Stephanie Nielsen of NieNie Dialogues is a sucker for and probably the number one fan of the Vanilla Squared Cupcake at The Sweet Tooth Fairy. Well, after hearing about this, the Sweet Tooth Fairy herself decided to name the cupcake after NieNie. It is officially called Va-NIE-lla Squared. Isn’t that cute. I think it fits perfectly.

This Saturday The Sweet Tooth Fairy is hosting a cupcake charity event in honor of Stephanie’s Birthday. All proceeds from the sales of the “VaNIElla Squared” Cupcakes will go to the Nielsen Family and the Arizona Burn Center.

Here’s the deets. I hope to see you there. I’ll probably drop by early afternoon!

Get thee over to Cakewalk Baking Company!

I had the pleasure of visiting the Cakewalk Baking Company , Utah’s go-to gourmet and VEGAN cupcake shoppe, last weekend. Boy was it a delight! A pure 100-percent guilt-free delight! I was impressed beyond my expectations.

I have been meaning to go up to the Bountiful location since it’s opening in November and like a lame-o I had been putting it off. I have no idea why I thought it was so out of my way. I mean I’ll drive up to SLC in a snap. But for some reason I had a mental block that Bountiful was just so far away. Well peeps, I’m telling you…it is not! Especially this location in Bountiful.IMG_4450

Though I believe Utah’s cupcake scene is very far away from being complete, I do believe that the Cakewalk Baking Company is a huge piece to our puzzle. Why? The more diversity we can have in our cupcake scene the better, more universal and more competitive it will become… I love the idea of a vegan cupcakes. Afterall, some of my favorite cupcakes while living in NYC were vegan. I’m not quite sure what I was expecting…but boy did owner Kelly blow my head out of the water.

First of all. I was pleased that the location was easy to find and well identified. The Web site made it very clear of the location and hours. (Something that a lot of cupcakeries/bakeries, belive it or not, do not do). CBC is only open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. But that’s okay. I think it’s worth the planning.

IMG_4451

At first walking in I was greeted by Pierce, a very pleasant employee at the front counter. Then I was able to meet Kelly, the owner. I tell ya, friends…she is a happy person. You know how you can just look at or talk to someone and know that they are happy and happy with what they are doing in life? Well she is one of those people. There was just a great vibe in the shoppe and I was so happy to be there. (Thanks for being such a good sport, Kelly…I totally just popped in at random!)

I ordered one of every kind of cupcake they had that day, including two of the mini chocolate vanillas.

CBC is not just a place for vegan cupcake lovers…it’s a place for ALL cupcake lovers. I don’t know what it was but I haven’t enjoyed a cupcake this much for a long time, maybe even EVER! I examined each cupcake and it appears (and tastes) like each little cupcake was given the time, attention and care it needed….and not only in baking and decorating….but in planning. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into each of these.
Vegan Cupcakes at Cakewalk Baking Company in Bountiful, Utah
The cupcakes were all very moist. They each carried their own weight if that makes sense. You know…like if there is a lot of frosting on them…they dont’ topple over. And the frosting. Gosh,it was just so smooth and not too sweet at all.

Let’s break it down. Here’s what I tried:

Mini Chocolate Vanilla – not pictured because I completely scarfed mine down in the car before I even pulled out of the parking lot. Sorry–you’ll just have to get one for yourself.

If I remember correctly this was the most popular and my second favorite next to the Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Frosting

Loved how this was a different size. It was packed with cool mix-ins that were moist and delicious. Frosting was yum.

Though my main reason for dropping by was the cupcakes. You can also find many other treats at Cakewalk Baking Company. You know, like any food product, baked good or junk food that vegans crave! They’ve got everything from teese, sausage and suckers to dillos (faux twinkies), pucks(faux ding dongs) and marshmallows. Pretty cool, ey? I tried the baklava and the raspberry dillo. Man…so good!

Please go over and tell Cakewalk Baking Company hello! I’d love to see this place prosper. Heck, it seems like it already is doing fab, I arrived around 3/3:30 (they open at 2 p.m.) and it appeared a crowd had gobbled a lot of treats up! You can also mail order the dillos if you are interested!

I’m always amused at what a box of cupcakes looks like after my tastings and photo shoots. And please know, every last inch of those cupcakes is sitting in someone’s happy tummy!

Sumo Cupcakes

those saggy moobies seem all to real! nice work!

SUMO Wrestler Cupcake!

made by our st. george cupcake lover ellecupcake.

Here’s a little excerpt of her thoughts from her blog:
We used regular sized cupcakes pans and a recipe from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. Although.. we hardly followed the directions and put different flavoring (Mexican Vanilla and Coconut) They tasted pretty good!

For the faces we used Vanilla Waffers and frosted the whole cupcake and waffer and just drew faces and bodies on them :) I think they turned out pretty cute and I heard the Birthday boy and his friends really liked them too!
