I had the pleasure of visiting the Cakewalk Baking Company , Utah’s go-to gourmet and VEGAN cupcake shoppe, last weekend. Boy was it a delight! A pure 100-percent guilt-free delight! I was impressed beyond my expectations.
I have been meaning to go up to the Bountiful location since it’s opening in November and like a lame-o I had been putting it off. I have no idea why I thought it was so out of my way. I mean I’ll drive up to SLC in a snap. But for some reason I had a mental block that Bountiful was just so far away. Well peeps, I’m telling you…it is not! Especially this location in Bountiful.
Though I believe Utah’s cupcake scene is very far away from being complete, I do believe that the Cakewalk Baking Company is a huge piece to our puzzle. Why? The more diversity we can have in our cupcake scene the better, more universal and more competitive it will become… I love the idea of a vegan cupcakes. Afterall, some of my favorite cupcakes while living in NYC were vegan. I’m not quite sure what I was expecting…but boy did owner Kelly blow my head out of the water.
First of all. I was pleased that the location was easy to find and well identified. The Web site made it very clear of the location and hours. (Something that a lot of cupcakeries/bakeries, belive it or not, do not do). CBC is only open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. But that’s okay. I think it’s worth the planning.

At first walking in I was greeted by Pierce, a very pleasant employee at the front counter. Then I was able to meet Kelly, the owner. I tell ya, friends…she is a happy person. You know how you can just look at or talk to someone and know that they are happy and happy with what they are doing in life? Well she is one of those people. There was just a great vibe in the shoppe and I was so happy to be there. (Thanks for being such a good sport, Kelly…I totally just popped in at random!)

I ordered one of every kind of cupcake they had that day, including two of the mini chocolate vanillas.

CBC is not just a place for vegan cupcake lovers…it’s a place for ALL cupcake lovers. I don’t know what it was but I haven’t enjoyed a cupcake this much for a long time, maybe even EVER! I examined each cupcake and it appears (and tastes) like each little cupcake was given the time, attention and care it needed….and not only in baking and decorating….but in planning. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into each of these.

The cupcakes were all very moist. They each carried their own weight if that makes sense. You know…like if there is a lot of frosting on them…they dont’ topple over. And the frosting. Gosh,it was just so smooth and not too sweet at all.
Let’s break it down. Here’s what I tried:
Mini Chocolate Vanilla – not pictured because I completely scarfed mine down in the car before I even pulled out of the parking lot. Sorry–you’ll just have to get one for yourself.

S’mores
If I remember correctly this was the most popular and my second favorite next to the Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Frosting
Vanilla – sorry no photo. it’s the white one with multi-color sprinkles in the group shot
Plain and simple.

Chocolate Chocolate
Third Favorite

Blueberry Cheesecake
Dang cool flavor.

Coconut filled with Pineapple
Okay these was also a favorite

Lemon filled with Raspberry
Shoot I can’t remember the details of how I was feeling when I ate this…

Bavarian Creme.
Very fun and loved biting into the filling.

Carrot Cake
Loved how this was a different size. It was packed with cool mix-ins that were moist and delicious. Frosting was yum.
Though my main reason for dropping by was the cupcakes. You can also find many other treats at Cakewalk Baking Company. You know, like any food product, baked good or junk food that vegans crave! They’ve got everything from teese, sausage and suckers to dillos (faux twinkies), pucks(faux ding dongs) and marshmallows. Pretty cool, ey? I tried the baklava and the raspberry dillo. Man…so good!

Please go over and tell Cakewalk Baking Company hello! I’d love to see this place prosper. Heck, it seems like it already is doing fab, I arrived around 3/3:30 (they open at 2 p.m.) and it appeared a crowd had gobbled a lot of treats up! You can also mail order the dillos if you are interested!

I’m always amused at what a box of cupcakes looks like after my tastings and photo shoots. And please know, every last inch of those cupcakes is sitting in someone’s happy tummy!
